I send a client an email and that client refuses to just email me back...they always feel the need to call. Then they ask on the phone.... is this a bad time? Yes, it is always a bad time when you take up 30-45 minutes of my day everytime you call. Why can't you just put your thoughts in writing? I hate the fact that they don't do that...they call you on the road or something and then they expect you to remember everything that they asked for.
How do you handle clients that call all the time? This guy is a real type A personality. Being that I am type A as well I don't like having other people control situations.....

sounds like you need someone to deal with accounts for you, because their job is (partly) to take the call and then type it up nicely and pass it on to the team.
or you could just learn to deal...

i usually say "can you you hear me all the way back in the 80's? get a blackberry and stop wasting my time with your archaic means of communication" i find that humiliation works best when dealing with that type of person

caller id.
if it's their number straight to voicemail. when you have free time later in the day then go over the voicemail. sit on their requests for a day or two. when they start to complain tell them 'you are too busy and can't check voicemail messages during the day. emails are much faster'
sooner or later they'll get the hint grasshoppa!

he never leaves voicemail. But he will email me that he just called and ask me for a number to reach me.

I have told clients liek this that I need the changes in writing, because it is easie for me to reference, and I can be sure that all changes are made. AND, I will only begin changes I have in writing.

Are you really saying that you refuse to do business on the phone?
As for changes etc, after you get off the call, you write it all out and send to him and have him 'sign off' on the changes.
This really isn't that big of a deal and is pretty much SOP for agencies, just at an agency there's someone to deal with it for you.
The plus side is that that time is billable, so it doesn't take away from other tasks on the project.

That's just the way he is.
I had a client who would call me. leave a message sayin to call him, then text me to call him, then email me to call him, then im me to call him......but never said what the call was about.
So i learned to ignore him.
Then he was like "WTF, I called you why don't you call me back"
and I said I was busy.

Written is the way to go. Kindly remind him that phone time is also money – money that HE, or at least his boss, is forking out.
Barring that, change your number and 'forget' to tell him. That way he has no choice but to email you.

3) he feels like he has more control by calling
4) I have to deal with it no one else. So that hour is really important to me.
5) I don't refuse to do business but give me a heads up on why you are calling.
6) people that don't leave messages usually don't have something conscise to say
7) email leaves a trail which most clients don't like because it can be referred to.I spoke with him finally as he just kept calling and calling. We spend about an hour on the phone with him giving me directions and wanting to see them right away.

explain how he's keeping you from getting HIS work done too... that gets to some of my clients rather quickly... :) (be nice when you say it... hehe)...
salespeople, businessmen and PR people are yappers... you can't avoid that fact about them...
... but you do need to make it clear that your job entails that you sit and work (not gab)... that you're a physical producer and not a 'verbal' producer (even though I know you are also... cuz you outsource stuff... but you know what I mean...)
