In the UK we call it Dissertation.
Mines was done on the creative exploits of the KLF (like burning £1,000,000) and the mockery they made of the media, music and art establishments like the Turner prize etc.
I was on my way to getting a 1st Hons Degree with my work but unfortunately my dissertation wasnt appreciated very much by whoever was marking it.
Maybe the title of it had something to do with why it was marked so badly ....
"F*CK THE DISSERTATION!"
i called it.

sounds like my experience... i initially wanted to tackle the streetwear and lowbrow brand bubble, but was refused the go ahead on the topic because they felt it was a fashion/business project and couldn't see how much design was woven into these scenes.
then they let a kid do threadless-like t-shirts for his exhibition. cunts.

story and dimensional character development in the movie 'memento'. mainly how nolan was able to pull it off not only backwards but forwards as well.
ps if you get the dvd you can watch it forwards.

Might be good to try and narrow it down to how the commodification of design has an effect on culture. Or how its almost common practice for some advertisers to step over the line and create economic propaganda. You might be witnesseing a tiny death to mass marketing.

these are all great! i do think i need to narrow down my topic.
how are we witnessing a tiny death in mass marketing?
and any other thesis related to graphic design or advertising?
i'll also make sure to have the words 'implications and portrayal' in my topic ;)
