at least he has something to say and presents his work in a relevant and accessible manner...in the spirit of art for everyone...
Too many contemporary artists aren't concerned about contributing or swaying public opinion, or even make people think, young non-art history educated people, whom whether we care or not, make up the vast majority of citizens...so it's about time someone is creating politically charged work that could possibly act as a trigger to get these kids to find out more regarding the topics of his work..

to me its like 2 sides of a coin, on one you have the posturingly anti-everything crowd, so uncool they couldn't possibly be anything but totaly cool, and on the other the herds of yabbering idiots who elevate a new mediocrity to talk of the town every other week.
god the world sucks. I'm totaly anti the world right now.

Anyone ever heard of Blek Le Rat? Parisian guy I think, was doing some interesting stencil stuff long before there was ever a banksy
Site's balls but if you look, you'll find some stuff that was done years ago that Banky's stuff is very similar to. Mate's gallery is having an exhibition of his stuff soon – Leonard Street Gallery, EC2...

The cleverest graffiti ive seen was in these books my old man had from the late 70s or early 80s. - they were maybe callled "graffiti" and there was a huge series of them. The books were a collection of clever, funny and humorous graffiti from around the world from places like public toilets to walls and billboards.
Dont get me wrong, i like some of the stuff Banksy has done, its not 'new' though and he's no more of a genius than anyone else who's "art" or "spur of the moment rant" ended up in teh pages of one of those graffiti books. i just dont see why everyone has him up on such a high pedestal.

Peeps here probably just dont like having their sense of precious intimacy with a suject outed - we all like to feel that we're in the know, somehow believe that we know something the others don't.
Occasionally spying street art in the dark shadows behind some culturual vacuum in Islington or South Bank allowed us a moment of reflection - or the chance to let slip to foreign friends - "I know. I .. I, Ewen Nairn Dickie, KNOW who did that. I read about him on the internet!".
Now, this intimacy is outed - shared with all the other plebs - and we are angry. Angry, because we can be nothing else. Angrier still that said foreign friends have their very own Banksy Coffee Table book and need not the gritty reality of happenstance - they just turn a page. THEY have not earned it. But we'll always know we did.

"banksy sold out because he's in the newspaper"
such a pathetic outlook. Like not liking a band because you mother says they have "a nice beat".
- rasko40
I couldn't give a shit about that, and I've been writing on walls since around 1987.

i just want to know how being famous makes you a sellout... its not like hes minted from the whole thing.
