What did he do for the environment but disturb that of the animal world?
The guy got paid to piss of deadly animals. How is he a hero?
An entertainer and all round good guy, sure. But not a hero imo.

well said Hench.
And to finish Chossy's story, he got the directions off the girl and walked away sexy wetting himself wishing he'd asked her out for some Scotch Beef.

concrete, the dude owned and invested in some sort of zoo is what i read. he dedicated his life to saving all kinds of animal species.

So do a lot of other people... It's not like he was the only one person concerned with conservation on this planet.
its sooo like the Diana thing. Can you believe that wench was voted as one of the top 5 Britains of all time. OF ALL TIME!!!

wtf?! hi Crouwel.
how's the gunpowder etc?

ah steve irwin is definately australia's diana.
aussies love the macho hero, there was a comedy last year called "We Can Be Heroes" where different states competed to be australia's greatest hero. my favourite was the woman from perth who was disabled (one leg shorter than the other) but a champion "roller", she worked through her disability to roll from Perth to Fremantle in a heat-rending testament to the power of the aussie battler. genius.

Thank you, Vespa. A realist at last.

the real heroes where wildlife is concerned are vets, biologists, researchers who build up teams, solutions, plans, national parks, etc, all over the world. -- and not a one man's folly.
and an highly questionable one, because with this pretence "eco-warriors" you never know where the stunt ends and real science begins.

diplomacy, kelpie.

don't get me wrong i felt strange tugs of patriotism when i heard the croc man was dead but it's funny how johnny howard gets teary about an animal rights hero while he doesn't give a shit about ordinary aussie heros for instance those who fight for aboriginal rights.
i'd put journalist John Pilger up for national hero in terms of aussies who have made the world a better place.

-------------------------not really. I have read that lots of people who work in those fields have been influenced since childhhod by popular culture references such as Disney. So Walt Disney has done lots for the environment by not doing anything at all.
Irwin may have influenced and educated millions of people to understand and appreciate animals - more than any vet.
saying that, lots of conservationists hated Irwinsz methods.
maybe those people chopping the tails off stingrays took on board Irwin "hands on" methods.

Crouwel; remember remember the 5th of November...

Do you really miss him?
I recently saw a clip, with him hangin' a black mamba from his tail and repeting "it's dangerous, it's lethal, ecc.". I really think is not polite nor intelligent to bug animals.
- kelpie0
most animals are notably lacking in a code of proper social graces, I'm sure the mamba wasn't attending the next mamba's book group complaining of 'the nerve of the man' etc...

of course arts and individuals can influence other people attitudes and awareness to critical issues, but that's also too general. It's a mediatic effect and not a reality. And it doesn't avoid the fact that:
1. their first goal is entertainment (and money);
2. the people cutting off stingray barbs were not in the least "influenced" by the message but stupidified by the medium.
- kelpie0
'stupidified' is my new favourite word, I'll be using that in a sentence before the day is out.
