not really. I have read that lots of people who work in those fields have been influenced since childhhod by popular culture references such as Disney. So Walt Disney has done lots for the environment by not doing anything at all.

of course arts and individuals can influence other people attitudes and awareness to critical issues, but that's also too general. It's a mediatic effect and not a reality. And it doesn't avoid the fact that:
1. their first goal is entertainment (and money);
2. the people cutting off stingray barbs were not in the least "influenced" by the message but stupidified by the medium.
