(I'm sure this has been asked...but I couldn't find a thread on it.) Do you guys give a considerable discount if you are doing freelance projects for friends/aquaintances?
- horton0
yes.. the "bro-deal". sucks balls.

charge twice the amount so that they don't take advantage of you.
no really, in the real world, my social circle is small enough that those are people i would do anything for. They just have to be understanding of my time and schedule. I'm a giver.

no™
either free bees (depentant on calendar) or full rate, as i'm still waiting to get paid for a job i did at the beginning of the year for a family member....
chalk it up to once bitten

Discount, yes. Considerable discout...not anymore!
I've become too tired of bending over backwards doing favors for friends. It is just not worth it anymore. I could go on...but I'll spare you the stories.
From now on...I give friends and family a 20% discount of a rate that is very fair to myself and call it a day.
On occassion i will do something for free (like a CD booklet or show poster) if its for a friend and its a one-time deal and it will be fun for me.

I had a friend round today, something for nothing, I have two friends staying downstairs, I did a website last week, someone else needs a quick folio site making.
I'm nearly broke, nobody gives a fuck. Basically, I'm some kind of mug.

I make less every year, and I blame NT. It's easier than blaming myself.

I have decided, that when I return from my trip at the end of october, I am going to spend the next 6 months making lots of money.
That at least, is the intention, I have plenty of time to procrastinate and find excuses between now and then.
- ********0
how would you go about doing it, actively pursue new clients, make phone calls and so forth?
Where you going?
- rasko40
yeah I am going to try to gain some new clients of my own, but as I suck at that and have such lameass connections, I am going to make sure that I am working in house at agencies.
Of course, when I say 'lots of money', this is relatively speaking, I'm not talking hundreds of thousands or anything, just more than I have been.
- ********0
so you will look for a job at an agency?
- rasko40
Well not a job, but to work freelance.
I am also going to target independents that I like the look of, organic stores, quality furniture stores, places that look like they have potential, that way I hope to produce some nice work too.

very best of luck to you
- mayo0
yes, best of luck rasko. I'm dreading the client-hunting m'self :\

I had an interesting experience recently. I'd gotten into an extremely negative state of mind about work, about the kind of work we were doing for our remaining clients and about the possibility of ever finding enough new clients to sustain making a living. In the middle of the night I decided that having the opportunity to create anything was sacred, to welcome all and any work I was lucky enough to be offered, and to the do the best I could with those opportunities no matter how little it paid. Within a few days our phone began ringing more than it had in years, and we quickly became overwhelmed with work. Of course, being overwhelmed at times I have quickly reverted to the negative state of mind that helped get me there in the first place, but that's another story.
