most places can be pretty nice to live if you are absolutely minted.

because of an unusual set of circumstances, my investment was minimal

I agree - if you have money Philly can be good. I've lived outside Philly all my life. I hear every night on the news who got shot. There have been more people shot than there are days in the year. The mayor has given speeches, etc. There's been a lot of hit and runs too. My feeling is it's all getting worse and worse...Though Philly burbs are probably better than NYC burbs.

I live within the city limits, though not downtown. If you go downtown any night of the week and walk around late at night the streets are full of people like you and me going to restaurants and nobody seems too worried about getting shot

The Bridge, or Harlem.

americans that worry about getting shot need to get shot.

(Sep 11 06, 17:15)I agree, but at the same time I've been shot at, have been within arms distance of people getting killed and have had a lot of friends (acquantinces for the most part) die because of gun fire.
I'm not trying to come off as "hard", or anything like that, just that in some places in America it is drastically different - but for the most part walking down any street at any time is fine.
And I do believe that, and would never feel obliged to not do so.
... Which could constitute for some of my past run-ins, haha.

I just looked at a place in the Lower East Side yesterday, it was cheap, but far from any subways though.

I'm so sick of hearing about Brooklyn, everytime I go there I get lost—why the hell don't they have numbers for streets!?
