"The Elements of Typographic Style" - Bringhurst
...is my favorite, really direct and applicable information and it got me thinking about type in a "broader than Broadway" way. You're gonna buy many more books on type once this thing hooks you.

i recall using that one in school... it's loaded with some good history and plenty on on the evolution and 'fundamentals' of type.
