omg people here actually BUY music from iTunes?
- paraselene0
this is a great thread, everybody. thanks for the tips!
i went from using os9 to then working on pcs and have only had the new machine with osx on at home for about six months, so this is super useful.
kona, as regards itunes music folders on the hd, mine are a disaster, but i'm afraid to consolidate the files and tell itunes to get rid of the dupes. is that dangerous? if i start moving them around in the music folder, will my itunes get all screwed up cos the paths are changing? how do you deal with this?

(Sep 7 06, 07:06)i did a few times, sort of like to convert to proper citizenship.. but then i found out it has this copy-protection bullshite on it and it's in an annoying format that i need to convert to mp3 if i want to connect my shuffle to my car stereo's usb port.. bleh..
acquisition is so much more rewarding in that respect. :)

para, i've moved music before with itunes closed and when you open the app it still somehow knows where the music is. i just tried it here and moved an entire folder out of the itunes folder and onto my desktop and it still played it.
also, if you have duplicate tracks in your itunes player, delete them and when it gives you the pop-up warning something like "do you want to delete this from itunes only, or send it to the trash" send that f-er to the trash. i had shitloads of dupes and i went through one day and deleted all the doubles.
for some stuff like individual tracks not in an artists folder i've moved them into the artist folders before and itunes picked it right up.
hope someone knows more about this than i do. i don't know if that was helpful or not. :/

Do you actually keep copies of all songs in iTunes?
Also, I noticed iPhoto keeps 3 copies of each image (2 if you choose not to import). What a waste of hd space!
Is there a better app for photo management?
- paraselene0
yeah, kona, that is helpful, thanks!
and i hate, loathe, detest and despise iphoto.
i've been living off the thumbnails in column view of finder instead, but if anyone knows of a better app, i'd love to hear about it, too.

a few more tips:
you can put app shortcuts in your finder bar. (to the right of the arrows and view options)
if you don't use quicksilver, drop your applications folder in your dock. hold on the icon and it gives you a menu of all the folders contents. works for any folder actually.

para-
use iTunes [not the Finder] to organize your music and manage dupes:
prefs > advanced >
check 'keep iTunes folder organized' and 'copy files to iTunes music folder'... click OKthen, under the advanced MENUBAR, select consolidate library.
after this, you can just manage your tracks from within iTunes, no need to manage the folder in the finder, because with the 'keep organized' option checked, it wil automatically re-label all info on the files and folders.
you can moves files to the trash from iTunes by hiliting a track and hitting apple-delete...

jakeyjI have it like that. Right-click on it and it takes about 2 seconds to react. Is that a system setting or system being sluggish?

para, if you are ever unsure of the location of the file in the finder, hilite the track in iTunes and hit apple-R
i sometimes get paranoid, worried i'm deleting originals before they are copied to the iTunes library...

thanks barb! very nice.

no prob guys... i sorta geek out on macs, so i'm happy to help.
this page is INVALUABLE:
http://www.dougscripts.com/ituneā¦great for managing large libraries, i especially like the ones that remove excess track info and dead tracks

speaking of large libraries, i run a server if anyone is interested :P
it's always nice to test drive before you buy.

Also .mac trial is pretty cool. I only use for for iDisk.
Although I have webspace, iDisk is nice and convenient because it puts a live folder on your desktop.
So for instance I have a psd. I need to take home from the office. I drop it in the folder on my desktop at work, turn on my machine at home and it is in the folder. You only get 512mb on the trial and a gig if you buy a membership. But its certainly handy. Also syncing your safari bookmarks on multiple machines via .mac is handy too.
The trial lasts 2 months and if you don't need to extra half gig you can just start another trial.
