Now that I'm thinking about it. They actually might be the same frame. The orange one might be the small or medium framed bike, the black one might be the large or x-large frame of the bike.

More than likely.
Kind of weird though, haha.
It's the little things that go by the QA process I guess,

first decide if you want a mountain, road, or hybrid bike.
definitely go to a local bike shop, and they'll help you decide. be prepared to spend between $500-$1,000 for a good quality beginner bike.most shops will thuroughly fit you on your bike and will tune it up for free every so often, as well as re-fit you later on.
i got a cannondale SR500, and it's been great! i'm not sure about other brands, but cannondale offers trade-ins on all their bikes.

you could probably build one yourself.
http://www.performancebike.com/but i'd bet it'll be more expensive.

I tried to build one once. It was a bit hard and time consuming to me. I'm sure if I would have finished it it would have felt cool, but after I bought it I just wanted to ride the hell out of it, not put it together.

ninjasavant how did you ultimately decide on that bike?

the first one is a road bike. the second one is more of a cross-road urban bike.
