Must be that time of the yer, i did exactly the same kind of thing a couple of weeks ago but bought a hartail, Don't think i could cope with a road bike! In my opinion the heavyness of an mtb is more than made up for by bombing down some offroad goodness. bur i guess it depends on where you live.

I gots a road/offroad hybrid bike. Love it.
Don't do much extreme trail riding but it's nice to know that I can if I want to.
I ride the Gary Fisher Kaitai Dual Sport bike.
It has a fantastic black aluminum frame, it's light, nimble and set me back only $600. Looks evil just standin still.

I ride 22km a day on this.
I pass people all the tim, quick bike, all for 240 quid...
best thing I ever did (6 months in now)

my bike is 10yrs old cannondale. i wanna replace the wheels and brakes. but maybe better off buying a new one.
- joyride0
yeah, same here tk. I was going to update the front suspension, brakes and stuff. Figured i'd spend about $400. but I see i can get all new everything for a about 6 or so (2004-5). Hell i don't mind if it's hot, my current one is.

Is this a good bike?? http://www2.trekbikes.com/bikes/…
- CarlClay0
is there a better bike to consider for the money?
- ********0
how about a reasonably priced Trek?
- garett_west0
Not bad. Treks are solid bikes.
Click the frame colors though. Like the look of the burnt Orange frame better than the black one. It looks.... faster to me.

I'm not into the whole mountain bike kind of thing, but I imagine if I ever wanted to pick up bike riding again, that would be the obvious choice.
I like the Matte Black version.
- CarlClay0
So for about $500 to get around the city of LA (beach and quick runs) this would be a good one to consider?

Nice gw.
Is it me or when looking at the blown up versions of the bikes ... the frames are different?
- CarlClay0
flavorful I just spotted that same thing. The back looks different in the two shots.
- CarlClay0
It's hard to spend $500 when you see a $3900 bike sitting next to it.
- joyride0
markups on bikes are pretty high. Wait a year... they'll be motivated to sell it for a better price.

(Aug 15 06, 10:56)I saw that too. I like the Orange frame better than the black one for sure.
