I agree with JAO.
Everyone will always be judged by their past work and accomplishments. Dj Shadow is not what he was about 10, 5, years ago. Artist's need room to be different, piss people off, and to be an "outsider"
Much respect to Shadow.

(Aug 12 06, 11:59)that sounds so damn teenage emo. "oooh he is doing this to be more different then different and just for the sake of being different..just to kick the media and fans in the buttocks.."
come on, in a few years time Shadow will look back at this period in shame.
and he will never mention it anymore like Peter North refuses to admit his gay past.

'DJ SHADOW ft. mc blah and mc blah' it said on the poster. i thought, great, a new album by shadow, gotta check it out. so i bought the tickets and went to the show. once there it turns out to be a 'MC BLAH and MC BLAH ft. dj shadow' show. i got very dissapointed like most of the people and in the end everybody started shouting and throwing beer at the stage untill shadow ended up playing some of his old stuff without the mc's. i felt ashamed for him. this was at AB Brussels may 2006.

It's funny because 99% of Underground heads hated
"Endtroducing" when it hit.
Then they loved him when "Preemptive Strike" came out.
Remember he came from that whole "Soulsides" era, The man in my opinion is just ahead of everyone. Tell me his "Public Works" mix wasn't the shiite!
It was Crunk and Classic.>()

(Aug 12 06, 10:36)AHEAD?
ffs, why is everyone here so deeply rooted in the idea of timeline based trendwaves? ffs, i have never liked this sort of sound and never will, not tomorrow, not next year, not ever..
i don't care what dj shadow does, even if it was composing the score for a sequel to Sound of Music.
it's jsut too bad and i hope that soon another artist will arise that will surprise me with an album like Endtroducing.
As i had never heard of him before that (oooh how uncool of me .. point fingers at me now and steal my fucking emo lunchbox), this was an album that made me keep an eye on this artist since Endtroducing still moves me, such depth and display of dedication.
this music doesn't give me that feel at all.

well I haven't read all the replies in this thread nor have I bothered to listen to the new album yet, the .zip file is just sitting on my desktop, unopened...
I was fairly put off at first when I heard the Funky Skunk mix that came with the Obey box set, but after a few listens it grew on me, but I've always had a fascination with the whole crunk thing so that didn't bother me at all. I felt the mix dragged on though and feels a lot longer than what it actually is, which I don't think is ever a good thing...
I passed up The Hyphy Movement feat. DJ Shadow show in A'dam a month or so ago...mostly due to lack of funds..
I don't think I expect to hear anything like Entroducing or even The Private Press from him again. Even the classic material he produced for Hollywood Basic/Organised Konfusion etc, and the first Blackalicious album are still some of my favorite production of all time. But it belongs to that time period and I think RJD2 sorta picked up that vibe and actually progressed it to where Shadow probably wasn't inspired himself to bring it...
Say what you will about the new material, but ultimately Shadow did a lot for progressing both hip hop and downtempo cultures/scenes. He's curated projects with Steinski and Cut Chemist, pretty much single-handedly reinvigorated the whole sample-based music scene and has brought so much more interest to a new generation that would have probably never found any the original music he's sampled otherwise, which would be a shame, since so many of those old soul, jazz and funk records really shaped hip hop...
He's opened the door for guys like RJD2 and DJ Krush and brought more interest to labels like Mo Wax and Ninja Tune...
I have a lot of respect for what he HAS done and will keep listening to it for a long time to come, so for me I'm not even bothered if his new music is rubbish..
I've seen him live 3 times over the past 10 years, from DJ'ing with Latyrx to reproducing entroducing and pre-emptive strike material live on 4 turntables and a DAT... I've never been disappointed, and I reckon I'm gonna leave it that way...

...and soft, I have the album - it's a strange mix of music
- tommyo0
This has got to be a joke. Someone kidnapped Shadow and released music under his name.
- traut0
since him and james lavelle really stopped working together hes went down hill.
- traut0
perhaps he want to try and come up on prefuse 73 with this new electric sound thing. i think he should stick with the old soul records and dirty rustic beats.
what does your soul look like
- tommyo0
The beats sound no better than 99% of the rest of the commercial hip hop crap, it sounds about 6 years old too. This is a letdown and a half.

From an interview in March:
"Stylistically, it's very different from 'The Private Press,'" Shadow writes on his site. "Some have said 'Press' was an inward-looking album. If that's true, than this album is the opposite, and that suits me just fine. I've also stopped worrying if my changing taste in music costs me fans. You can't please everybody all the time, but you can please yourself."
That's too bad because I loved his old stuff, this new sound just isn't 'new'.
- ronaldo0
that's just horrible
- mattyd040
absolutely horrible.
- fowler0
I like this a lot.. a little too much diplo/hollertronix on that track, but it's still good, as well as the rest of the album.
- NegativeSpace0
agreeeddd, this is pure garbage.
