to make a broad generalization I think in north america you see more centred type, more serif typfaces, more 'techno' typefaces, a loose and 'playful' approach to using grids, softer and more emotional design, keylines/outlined rectangles, in general a more 'playful' sensibility...

and italics, if I use italics in a design that didn't HAVE to be used at my studio, they don't give me lunch for 2 weeks...

Could be lots of reasons but some are simpler than others. When i'm reviewing designers I come across a lot of stuff. Is your covering email/letter full of spelling mistakes or grand statements about "embracing technology and art to create meaningfull interactive solutions which connect with the soul"? You won't get past the fist stage. What type of job do you want? Do you want to design t-shirts all your life or corp websites, say so when you apply. Your site shows work from 2005/2006, where's the rest? A senior needs getting on for 5 years solid work.. Think if your work matches the agencies, so if you cv's full of cool graphics and shirts don't expect an interview at the AKQA's/Pentagrams of this world. It's all good work though, so don't dispare..you just need to find the right approach. D

Italics in certain text is fine. When it's used appropriately, such as in a title or to emphasize a word, it's okay, as long as it's not used excessively. Moderation is key.

Your portfolio looks a little sporadic. No doubt you can do nice work though so don't loose heart.
If you can, I'd suggest doing three favourite case studies. Ideally concept to completion. Brand creation, identity, advertising, brochure, web. (And if you don’t have live stuff, design some top notch stuff and say they’re pitches).
Wrap it up neatly and simply in a bespoke printed format and send it out to agencies that do similar or work you aspire to. (Helps if you get the persons name).
And never diss work you've done in the past for other agencies. That just indicates that your difficult to work with.

I like monoboy's suggestion about the 3 case studies. Might even try that me self. Ta.

I'd consider using another domain name.
I know that it's prudish of me to say, and I hate that about corpoate life, but I believe that a lot of people get turned off by the wrong domain name. In your case does an HR dept want to hire someone who flirts all day?
You never get a second chance to make a first impression.™
I'm pretty sure that I got passed over jobs in the past with my crazywicked dot com domain, and I used to say 'if they don't hire me because of that, I don't want to work there.' I soon realized that I was being stupid and changed my domain because I didn't want to scare people off imediatley by my domain. Since then, I've at least interviewed for every job I've applied to.
Sometimes it can work if you have a concept tied into the domain name...
