I've asked about this in other threads, but never got much of a response.
My birthday is coming up and I think I'd like to get a new lens for my rebel xt. Maybe I am doing something wrong, but I have not been entirely happy with the performance of the 18-55 kit lens it came with. The images never seem crisp.
I don't need pro gear by any means, but I'd like something a little better than what I got now. Some type of zoom lens in the 18-85 range maybe? Also a little faster of a lens would be nice. Give me some links please!

I have an EF 24-70 2.8L and it's my work horse. Good wide angle lenght and very nice prtraiture at 70mm. Gives nice contrast and saturation and the Bokeh is very creamy. It's a little bit pricey but worth every penny. Also, you may want to take a look at the new EFS 17-55 2.8 it's superb lens and it has IS.

*bump
Also, maybe someone knows of a good but cheap prime lens I could get my hands on. I think it would be in interesting way to practice better composition.

18-55mm is a cheap amateur lens that only gets 'crisp' stepped down to f6.3 and further. It is known to be "surprisingly good for the price", which doesn't actually say it's good. I'd recommend getting some quality 'universal replacement', ebaying the 18-55, and then starting to look for teles, primes etc.
A good lens that combines wide angle, range, sharpness, macro capability and fast aperture is the new Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4.5 DC Macro. Canon 17-40L f/4 is a great lens, only twice as expensive. Some like sigma 18-50 f/2.8, but it's reportedly quite soft @f/2.8
I wouldn't buy a zoom that is 24 or 28 at wide angle for the rebel. They're neither wide nor long and belong in fullframe world.
IMO, of course :)btw, I ordered the Sigma 17-70, will have it on Friday
