Can anyone recommend a good DSLR. I'm thinking the Nikon D50 looks pretty great. My friend highly recommends it.
Anything else worth checking out in this price range?

wow, it's only $660 on Amazon.com, brand spanking new. $779 seems really high.
So you guys like the D50?

in that price range, definitely

ok, i think it's a done deal then. i was already pretty sure. thanks.

effort,
Do you have a link to the Amazon deal? It may come with less accessories, it might just be a body.
You will be ready to shoot with what you buy from cameta.
compare deals with slrs. accessories are always key, there are cheaper options on ebay as well, but less accessories.

canon... canon... canon....
sets the benchmark for digital.nikon uses a ccd processor.. like a video camera...
canon uses its own invention.. the digiII processor, which is amazing... used and seen both canons and nikons... canon wins the prize.

Carty, thank you for your experienced words of wisdom
*looks into digiII

As a pentax dslr user (the same sony CCD sensor minolta and nikon use) I have to agree, canon gives the best image quality, good for those who are going to post-process the image. An underexposed canon jpg contains lots of valuable image data in the dark areas, where you'd mostly have noise on ccd originated images.
It gets even better with RAW, of course.
But better take some samples from the web (like http://dpreview.com ) and play with photoshop sliders on your own..

hmm, i wanted to buy nikon d200, but after reading what carty said, maybe canon 20d or 30d...
i am so bias to nikon though... maybe they'll come out with their own sensor soon?

Sounds like Canon might be taking the lead now...

i'd say spend a bit more and get the new Canon 30d
- ourcommon0
and if you wanna spend a bit more than the 30d, drop the extra cash for the 5d
that's what I shoot with these days .. a totaly workhorse and American Photo just gave it "camera of the Year"

I have a Nikon D50, from a Nikon F65, and it's great. I prefer the feel of the f65 but yeah It's good.
I'm not a good photographer or anything but I have some pics at http://www.clol.co.uk if you wanna have a look..

(Jul 12 06, 10:16)the 'upgrades' from the 20D are not worth the price difference.
I think i've said it about 10 times on here: the Canon 20D is the best camera for the price by far! especially for all us non-pros (carty excluded) : )

I highly recommend the 5d if you can afford it. Worth the price for the full frame pics especially with a wideangle.
If you're looking at getting in cheaper though go buy a 20d instead of a 30d. The 30d is an upgrade to the 20d but the upgrades aren't really anything that someone just getting into a DSLR would notice.

Back at you ourcommon. Nice site and work too.
Those Wayne Newton photos are funny. He's so creepy looking. I saw him in the crowd of the last Ultimate Fighting matchup and he looks surreal.
