In the recent past I've worked for 3 of the largest ad agencies in London. 2 years ago total billings for digital accounted for roughly 10%. Place where I am now, it is now over 50%.
The growth in digital advertising, clients understanding they will get better results online over traditional DM, and the fact that there aren't enough good people to do the work has created the situation.
I know of one agency with a similar name to agency) who are turning away commissions because they don't have enough people to fulfil the work.
Make hay whilst the sunshines. I agree that this is the proper boom. You only have to look at the BBC broadcasting football and Channel 4 putting episodes on the web, to see that the internet as an entertainment medium is here to stay.

same: what exactly is the lesson to be learnt from hyperisland students, that they're believable designer-coder hybrids right out of school?

I think the main thing is be really good at 1 thing at the least. If you are good at 2 things even the better. But the problem we see over and over is kids spend so much time trying to learn to build a website that they neglect their design skills. So they come out of school with mediocre design skills and crappy webdesign coding skills.
If you want to do design, Focus on it and try to do reall well in that first.
Same applys if you want to do motion graphics or Flash Developement.
There are always the cases where a few people can learn both at the same time and do well, but if you are floudering in both, pick one and try and rock it.

How is that a problem? How often are designers right out of school expected to take creative lead on projects?

I dont think we expect them to take the creative leads, but it would be nice if they can design for the web.
I notice alot of kids do really good print work, then you ask them to do a website design and it ends up looking like a corporate site because in their head they think website design always = some boxed in corporate style type site.

good conversation going on here.
same, i like your input into this. if a student came in to get a job with you - what would he have to do to really impress you?
i've recently noticed alot of jobs for developers...seems to be a little thin in that area IMO.

I personally just went freelance with my illy's ...
So that's one more fulltime job on the market.

=======================If you come in for a designer position... say you really want to design. So many people come in and we ask them what they like to do and they are like. "I like to design, and code.. i even like marketing and business....I don't really have a favorite." We just want to hear that you want to be a kick ass designer plain and simple.
As for your work, We simply want to see really good design skills that are in line with todays style or even have your own style that blows us away, and that you have at least a knowledge how to design for the web. Personally If a student shows me a book of great print design and a couple websites.. that show promise.. that is good.
Of course there are some of us who came out of school with 70% web and 30% print portfolio... when we (and by we I mean interactive shop) see that and they have good design skills, that is the ideal person.
Also, one thing i try to get student to do is to show some projects that involve thinking, and not just design thinking, I am talking concepts like a commercial, or subservient chicken etc. And above all...presentation skills if you want to be an Art Director down the road.
Even though you start out as a designer, a lot of designers want to be come Art Directors. And art directors are responsible for concepts, presentation... and direct a team of designers. Some art directors are very good designers but most of those crazy good websites you see out there are by art directors who cant even draw.. they are thinkers.
So if you come out of school, have decent design skills, good idea concepts and presentation skills. You will do better than 99% of most students.
If you just want to design... then work your ass off and show me some good design and how you can apply it to the web.
Cheers

Thanks same...I myself am kind of all over the place and reading you comments, find I need to be more focused on a certain area.

that was really thought out and really nice to see that there is real conviction in what you're saying.
if i was in web design i would want to work with you.

oh, one more thing.
DONT DESIGN IN HTML
design in with design tools like illustratrator, photography and do all your layout in photoshop...
So many people start by coding up a site, and trying to make it look good as you code.
you should never touch coding until you have everything laid out in photoshop ready to go into production, whatever that production may be.

Mrpt, your illustration skills are very good. Llike this stuff. http://www.complexfruit.com/delu…
Why dont you use those skills to make your sites?Like i was saying previously... many people have really good design/illustration skills then your websites look all corporate and badly laid out. It looks like when you go to design your sites or even some of your layout stuff, your illustration skills seem to dissapear.

Point taken. I'm trying to incorporate it more on the things I've been working on. I'm still a work in progress on my design/web skills.

after working at the company with 95% female, 4% gay male and 1% straight male, i realized working with too many hot girls aren't all that. they are often, not very smart, too gossipy, and bratty. i'd only go back as a director, wait, i meant a dictator.

e-pill.
your portfolio only shows that you are a good illustrator and it seems you have pigeoned holed yourself into 1 style. You need a bigger breadth of work, everything seems the same. If you are looking for a design job, I dont think i would hire you unless you could show me a range of design skills and styles. Right now all i see is you can illustrate 1 style. I see no webdesign skills, and no real graphic design skills. your work is good but unless you want to only be an illustrator that gets freelance jobs here and there, you are going to need to show breadth of style, bigger portfolio with examples of other styles of layouts of posters, websites, cds, magazines etc...

yep. 3 people have left my place in the last month. perhaps i can be hired on instead of being through a headhunter...
