same: what exactly is the lesson to be learnt from hyperisland students, that they're believable designer-coder hybrids right out of school?

I think the main thing is be really good at 1 thing at the least. If you are good at 2 things even the better. But the problem we see over and over is kids spend so much time trying to learn to build a website that they neglect their design skills. So they come out of school with mediocre design skills and crappy webdesign coding skills.
If you want to do design, Focus on it and try to do reall well in that first.
Same applys if you want to do motion graphics or Flash Developement.
There are always the cases where a few people can learn both at the same time and do well, but if you are floudering in both, pick one and try and rock it.
