yeah El Raval is not dodgy at all unless you are some kind of old lady, have a look up San Antoni to check out nasty whores at 10am (wtf?) check out the modern art gallery and wander south, there is a street with a bunch of vintage shops nearby and a shop to buy all you spray paint and markers ehehe, also there is a street on the other side of las ramblas called Avigno which has some trendy kinda shops if thats your bag. Also, I recommend a small restaurant in El Raval called Sesamo, really nice. The is a bar called Bar Ra which do the awesomest Mojito's. The cable car upto Montjuic is also worth a go.

Mojito hunting is a fruitful endevour in Barcelona. Theres a Cuban place in Gracia does some awesome ones too...

Near Las Ramblas, somewhere behind the fresh food market La Boqueria, you'll find Bar Ra. It's placed next to a parking lot, but don't let this discourage you. Fine, friendly priced food there (i.e. fresh fish from the market). Atmosphere's really great at Spanish dinner time. You could also walk around a bit, there were a few more restaurants. And all this surrounded by lots of cool grafitti! Barcelona has some of the coolest grafitti I've ever seen.

If it's your first time in BCN, you should see Las Ramblas just once, that's really enough...

Owned by FC Barcelona's trainer, Rijkard. They had nice food too, and mojitos...The Funicular is worth a try, up to Mont Juic.
Tibidabo, the hill, is a great view. You can walk down to the city if you have the time... It'll only take an hour or two.
El Born area is ok. I saw to women fight there when I visited in April...
El Raval has plenty to see, including ho's. We had dinner at Carmelitas in Calle Carme, not far from MACBA, which also is a great place to see. http://www.macba.es
Oh, and my camera got stolen when I visited back in 2001, my brother's camera got stolen when he visited last week, I've seen people getting robbed, and heard about quite a few others... so... but the risk is higher beeing drunk/old, or fat, old american with the wallet in the back pocket...
