There's this really good interview with Bill Viola where he talks about features of the human eye in realtion to self defense etc. He makes a really great analogy to a thorn on a rose.

It is just your eye replacing the colours you were just looking at with their opposites. If you look at a yellow light for 30 seconds and then close your eyes ytou will see a purple blob in the same place.

very similar to how things look normal when you work under fluorescent light all the time even though everything is actually a bit green.
your brain gets fatigued / used to it and compensates by pitching everything a notch towards the hue in the opposite direction.
