sorry - y, that sort of motion, linear blur
i used to do it with KPT a long time ago, but never really tried it since, and now me and co-worker are trying to use on something and are arguing over the best way to do it

Do you not just grab a one pixel wide selection and stretch it?

i'd like to know how they do this:

I still don't know what you're talking about :)
The pixel stretch on the edge / spine of the books?
If it's that, select a vertical column of pixels and stretch them. Pixel stretch. See?
- rasko40
the best way is to select a one pixel deep area and then just apple J (dupe into new layer) and then nudge it one pixel across, then repeat.
Obviously you can then merge multiple layers and move them to make things faster.

Photoshop > Filter > Distort > Shear > Repeat Edge Pixel

this is the best use of pixel stretch I've ever seen

Illustrator> make lots of volumes w/ different colors and print at infinite resolution.
