Awesome, keep the tips and crazy stories coming!
I have great headphones, not noise cancelling but they block out everything. I always take magazines and will probably take a new book too.
Planes are where I get most of my inspiration for song lyrics, actually. Something about the aspect of fate and uncertainty and technology and travel that always does it for me. I'm not a fatalist, but being high above the earth where any problem would likely result in death causes me to really ponder EVERYTHING.

16 hours to Auckland.
Make sure your fully hydrated before you get on the plane, start drinking water the day before. That recycled air is a killer on the long flights, always makes my eyes feel like sand paper.

"... I was a bit surprised that the flight pattern is that direction, because it seems like west would be a shorter distance..."

(May 23 06, 08:41)Depends on the jet stream. Flying East uses the jet stream, flying West, fights it.
When I went to Singapore, we went straight north, from San Francisco, over Alaska, down the East Rim, into Asia.
On the way home, we webt directly East from Japan, over the Ocean.
It was WAY faster, with a jet stream of 475 MPH behind us. If we went straight into that on the way West, we'd of run out of fuel half way there.

13 hours, London to Harrare
No drugs, no drinks15 hours, Johannesberg to London
No drugs, no drinks14 hours, London to Kuwait City
Got pissed in London, slept most of the flightOn the return flight, by virtue of the KC airport and flying Kuwait Airlines there were no drugs or drink to speak of. To make the experience more surreal it is a Muslim airline so they would read the Quran before they took off, pray, and there was a screen showing which way Mecca was for prayers. On the tv I could only get Indian movies and British sitcoms. Coach also seems like where Indians with little children like to fly. It was definitely an experience. Next time I'll take Emirates.

50 minutes from London to Amsterdam, off my face...anxious, and drunk.....WARNING:do not do cocaine in a flight even if it is only 50 minutes, the anxiety will kill you, if that won´t the paranoia will...

My ticket says 12 hrs, 57 minutes on the way there. You figure it might be longer?
BTW - I leave Chicago at noon on a thursday and arrive there at 3 pm tokyo time on a friday.
Have not done the math yet, but do I run the risk of being in daylight the whole flight?

(May 23 06, 09:01)Yeah, the 35+ hours to Winnipeg weren't fun. I have a high tolerance level, so I managed to sleep through most of it and just listen to music. But my mom was having a crappy time. My entire family was with me, so the trip was worse at times because we all had to be together. But it also made it easier because someone else could get food while others just hung around. I guess the food sucks whether you are on a plane or a bus.

TRY TO GET A SEAT ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE PLANE!!!
most important in going to JAPAN!!
reason is Mt. FUJI!!!!!
on the arrival to Narita the plane will fly past Mt. Fuji so only people on the left side of the plane will see it.

Shannon(Ireland) - Capetown (South Africa) 12.5 hours
Alcohol. Sleep. Food.
Dublin - Los Angeles 11 hours. Premier Class. Champagne. Chardonnay. Food. Movies. Alcohol. Beer. Wine. Sleep.
To keep from getting dehydrated drink more water than alcohol. This will keep you active - going to the toilet all the time and prevent DVT and boredom.

it's the non-smoking that kills me. I can't sit still without smoking for more than 8 hours. That's my limit, even then I have to suck on my nicotine stains, take nicorette and wear the patch. Otherwise I'll scalp someone...
