It seems they go out of their way not to use flash on their site. See the old school js clock on this:
http://www.apple.com/retail/fift…
(would be more dramatic in flash showing miliseconds)
Is this some sort of QT protection thing?

because they own quicktime.

why stop at milliseconds?
- kyl30
why ask why?
- rasko40
what dont you follow?
- euopean_hoopoe0
i think they use javascript. milliseconds can be done in javascript

they finally got the fast start working all good then flash video came along and set it all back 5 yrs

I am not trying to take the standpoint that EVERYTHING MUST BE FLASH, but there are somethings better in certain formats.
I guess the real answer is that they do own QT. What is lame for me is that in instances where they can't use QT, they hack some old js script together instead of doing it in flash which would make it a lot easier.

apple.com is heavily trafficed, which we all undertsnad, right

Are you saying that QT files load faster or are lighter then flash files?
- euopean_hoopoe0
Yes, using the new ads as example

No - same ad loads faster and weighs less in flash video. They have been posting it on CNN and other portal sites via flash video not QT.
- euopean_hoopoe0
CNN and other portals post and choose their own format
- euopean_hoopoe0
...which is obvious because if apple were to choose the format themselves they would use any opportunity to promote quicktime
