what kind of "extra usability" do you imagine this creating?
if anything, i think these new embedding techniques make providing alternative content and proper flash detection incredibly simple, something definitely missing from the majority of flash sites out there.

gabe... I'm talking about the extra click to activate the flash...
... old sites or existing sites are going to have a useability issue until dev folks pick up the slack and fix their html to call up a .js script to insert their flash...
... that usability issue is nothing else but that 'extra click' to active the flash.
Now - what about all these sites that use multiple 'pods' of flash placed w/divs... you'd have to click once on every embedded peice of flash to activate it's contents...
... that's the usability issue that I see scaring people (clients who jump to conclusions) away... that one little extra click... especially if a page requires a bunch of little extra clicks - that is going to annoy the hell out of people once everyone's IE is up to speed...
I fear it could annoy everyone enough that people start noticing Flash as being a pain-in-the-ass peice of the web as apposed to a way of delivering rich media w/out the end user knowing they're looking at Flash.
I could just be paranoid.

you bastard, now i'm paranoid!

The adobe workaround is really easy and works well too, just install the extension for flash and export all the javascripts etc when you publish as usual.

Enter response:I suggest smoking weed - the paranoia becomes common place... that way - stuff like this just rolls off your back...
... until you realize you spent the last three years drilling Flash into your head... only to not use it anymore?

Eolas was even so kind to post all the news article related to their actions

Also be careful where you may be forcing scrollbars to be hidden... using overflow:hidden
as it doesn't pop up with the announcement... we had a site whereby you couldn't click it...
fixed now though :)

which solution did you opt for engage?

the macromedia one is how I'm proceeding... just figuring out where to pass my variables... as it attaching a .swf to your attributes list through js

spent the last two days updating every frickin' flashsite i ever did with that js workaround. what's microsoft's billing address?
- robbob0
we're making a bunch of $ on it, and in good faith too - it needs to be fixed on our clients sites, so we do it. stupid microsoft ...

well it's not actually microsofts fault is it?
why is FF not subject to the same patent?

Enter response:i'd love to know the answer to that one, myself... what of other browsers... Nutscrape, Mozilla... Opera etc...
PAY THE MONEY FOR THE FRECKLED PATENT.
I usually stand by micro$oft... but all I can conclude... THE ONLY CONCLUSION THERE IS... is that this is a non-open source/proprietary/gotta-grab-ou... sort of deal...
Is this perhaps... PERHAPS (mind you - I'm not a conspiracist by 'race'... I'm usually conservative).... but... I'm thinking that this is actually a scheme to FORCE the masses off of Flash, Real and Quicktime (is QT having issues too?)... hmmm... what about windows media? (i doubt it)...
... so - is it a ploy to squeeze Adobe/Macro/Real/Apple off the web... just as they... well - sort of have done (c'mon... they ARE the market... they don't just 'own' it)...
... because Vista's gonna have lots of whistles that are web-related but will only work if you have the OS...
... it's a Ploy I tell you... A PLOY... A FIRST STEP IN FREEZING THE OPEN-MARKET ... until one day... when the 8am Bell rings and the MSBC anchor announces that "'the microsoft' just opened at the sound of the Bell"...
... and from the ashes... quitely lying.... waiting...
... ready to deploy it's new super-indexing skills...
... was google.
time to sleep. :)

I'm sure I read somewhere it has to do with firefox not being a behemoth, and ff is an open source thing... also that microsoft just went ahead and did it, whereas netscape didn't and it left them in the dust... alledgididdly!

if you read all of the news articles posted in the link above (by YOU, ponyboy), it explains why this is targeted specifically at microsoft, not other browsers, and that flash, qt, et al are safe

This javascript work for me.
Include the JS in the head tag of your page.

is my usability safe? Did Microsoft leave it so there's no 'visual' or noticeable change w/their decision?
no. They made it so BOTH the user and the developer have to take extra steps...
'small' steps? one click?!! oh my god get over it?!!
... this shouldn't even be an issue... in an idealistic world. :)
it just drives me nuts, acescence... because this is a 'big' Global deal that is more 'annoying' than anything else...
... and yes... does come down to money in the end... which - well, I guess is fine... it's... just... annoying.
- acescence0
my post was mostly in response to your conspiracy theory bit...
yes it sucks. and it could have been avoided if ms had just paid what would have probably been some trivial amount of money
