I just tried out Paintdotnet. Nice simple user interface. Lightning fast! Two things that just kill it. Not compatible with .psd and text tool is raster based like in PS3. I would love to see this project go and give Gimp a beating. Wait and see.

I was a believer while back, but to be honest Gimp just doesn't cut it. The user interface is weak and it takes ages to do even little things. On the background algorithms are getting better, but the original developers are just so in love with their GUI that I reckon the whole project will run out of steam sooner or later. I have much more hope for open source vector tool Inkscape. They are making improvements on the type engine and eventually I could imagine someone might even want to switch from Illustrator and Freehand to a lighter bug-free SVG-compatible workflow.

Gimp opens up .psd, but I'm nost sure about .ai files. I'm not sure whether it supports all the features, but at least most.
I had no trouble installing Paint.NET using the installation wizard. You just need the .NET runtime and Windows OS obviously. I wonder if they are planning a Mono port.

does Gimp open psd, ai files?

I used it a bit in 99. the interface sucked then and probably sucks now. obviously created by a programmer

considered it briefly to recommend to clients who wouldn't shell out for PS to edit their image content, but it proved to be far too complicated and unuser-friendly. Elements and a slight pain in the pocket won the day...

i tried gimp didnt like it because the UI tries to be windows mac and linux reason why most people hate it is they use photoshop and unless it has the same workflow its hard to like it but someone who is picking up a program like that for the first time might like it more cause hes more willing to learn it...
Paint.NET is nice and free...prob with open source is they dont have there own vision for what the program should be and how it should work open source to me is mostly copies of whats been done but not aswell... not all Open source programs but pretty much... people who make things should reference things already made it will make you stop thinking about how it could work...
