I was a believer while back, but to be honest Gimp just doesn't cut it. The user interface is weak and it takes ages to do even little things. On the background algorithms are getting better, but the original developers are just so in love with their GUI that I reckon the whole project will run out of steam sooner or later. I have much more hope for open source vector tool Inkscape. They are making improvements on the type engine and eventually I could imagine someone might even want to switch from Illustrator and Freehand to a lighter bug-free SVG-compatible workflow.
