aparticularpath,
Phoenix blows for getting a job. There's only a few bigger agencies and that's pretty much it. If you are freelancing, it's not too bad, but you really need to get into real estate clients, nothing else is really going to make you decent money.
Average salaries are pretty much around $40-$50k for a decent position, if you get more then you can consider yourself very lucky, it all depends of course what you do.
I"ve been living here for almost 5 years and I've been pretty much working with Cali, more so then anything local here, another reason why I'm moving to LA.
Phoenix is nice, it grows on you in a weird freaky way since social aspect of the desert will definitely be felt. You have to freakin' drive everywhere for at least 20 mins if you want to go out. But still, even with that, the shitty desert got my heart in a way. You can make a solid living but don't expect the life of rich and famous.

hate to break it to you man, but it's going to be the same, and probably longer a lot of the times in LA.

if you come here - freelance is the way to go. The studios, agencies and magazines are all mediocre - alot of the talent I know has gone freelance.
There are a few Agencies/Studios that do have some decent clients that are worth looking into (Blender Haus mentioned earlier is okay too - they're more of a 'rent your space/take your cut' type of joint):

You'll either love it or hate it – it's a huge city, sprawled out much like LA, but with a reasonably modern downtown and some big business going on. But it's no design-hub.
Salaries are low but cost of living is very low. If you're into outdoorsy stuff, it's a great place to be, but the desert takes some getting used to. And within the city itself, you're basically living in a 100 degree + oven for a good chunk of the year. Don't go outside in August.
