over the years I've been donating my evenings and weekends for collab crap and friend favors.. but lately i just cant see it. Is there really a good way to let people down easy?

Say you're too busy
- Point50
Yeah, tell them you're working on freelance projects for a pretty important client and that you just don't have time.
- ldww0
just be nice. i am sure they will understand. tell them you are currently getting so many requests for work that you are not taking on pro brono projects. (do not say free, its sounds cheap).

I still do some work for friends, but I have slowed it down considerably.
When a client, friend or not has no money or time invested in a project, they tend not to respect your time as much as they would if they were paying. Explain that in the most tactful way and that should help.

along the lines of no freebees

Tell them no money no honey!

Tell them you have paying clients and can't devote time to pro bono.

tell them to talk to my fist

dobs got it right.
get the right/wrong person and they don't respect you unless money's on the line.
I've seen it first hand. before you know it, you're too nice and you get stepped on and stressed out for nothing.
let em know you've been worn too thin and you're taking some time to yourself.
go so far as to refer someone else, but let them know you can't do it anymore.
and if it's a money thing? let em know you'll play if they pay.
bottom line. if they're getting recognition or money because of your work? you should get some too..... only fair.

promise it then completely cut ties with them near the begining of the project. if it's truly worth it, then you'll carry through. remember to burn briges with those who pay shit or get in your way to higher paying gigs. never sign a contract or give them your ss#.
if it's a friend then tell them you're busy.

it's not a money thing, i would never charge these people.. just real bad timing..
thanks all - all good advice

if you can a bj out of it carry through
- Seff0
id rather rub one out than design for a bj
- version30
you tried to help me once, that was enough for me, you're a good guy, just tell them you can't do it without pay, it is after all you're job.
very few people want to work for free, from good jobs to bad jobs
i doubt b. gates or s jobs would be the success he is without the desire for gain and how many people do you know that would work a fryer at McDonalds for free, noone
it goes both ways, people understand (opr at least should)
i too though get tired of
"Just do it quick"
"But you like what you do"
"It's just small and easy"
"It won't take you long"...like they know, if they did, they'd either do it themselves or stop asking

true enough, once people find out i "do the graphics design"
i always hear this one:
"i should get you to do xyz"
- conceited0
i'll design for a bj
- conceited0
..just kidding
- conceited0
no..i'm not..
- tkmeister0
no means no.
tell them you want to have a better life quality and focus your free time on your own happiness instead of making others happy.

not to mention it drives down the value of design.
