Today is the day I have to make a choice between the Macbook Pro and a Powerbook. So all Macbook pro users give me some feedback. How does it run photoshop and illustrator is it slow? How does it run everything else? And is it true that it will not work with existing airports?

I just purchased one yesterday. I got the 2.0 Ghz 2 GB RAM. Runs pretty smoothly. I haven't instsalled any non-apple stuff yet. It connected to airport immediately on first boot, no probs. It does get a little warm though.

Man some of those problems sound downright serious!!

I am actually facing the very same dilemma. I'm debating between a 17" PB and a 15" MB, and right now I'm leaning towards the PB.

I got one on Friday. As far the heat goes, it's true. It gets quite warm. Not so much that it hurts to touch. Haven't noticed flickering with low lcd brightness.
I figure if it encounters any real bad probs apple should replace or fix it. Don't forget the apple care.

e-pill has one.
keep in mind the man switched from a G3 macos 9 to macbook.

which one looks nicer? are there any decent looking pc laptops?

Where is epill? we need his expertise, if he has a Macbookpro.

ok...i hit some issues.
1. laptop gets very hot
2. battery only lasts 2 hours when just sitting idle without powercord
3. CS2 ...bouncing ball and sluggish. sometimes arrow gets stuck in place for 3 seconds.
4. anything not Adobe is LIGHTNING FAST.
5. CS3 will be released in a few months.
6. start-up time is like 30 seconds maybe less.
7. a G4 17PB is a mega great deal and its all maxed out but not as fast as a MacBookPro. nor does it have the incredible Screen the Intel Mac has. also the Macbook PRO has a starting faster CPU and a built-in video digital camera in the screen.overall some applications are sluggish but others are incredibly fast. which is being fixed. i have the 20" flat panel Apple Display and if you can afford a larger screen then i suggest you get it. Apple Care is a must. max out all the Ram and get the largets HD you can afford...i have the 100GIG and after all the programs i have installed i onlly have 50GIGS left...the Adobe CS2 package is large as hell...not even sure if i need these programs or not...i have open at any given time 8 programs and i havent skipped a beat cept for sluggish issues with Illustrator.
but my files arent large where i will need to complain.its a solid machine and in a few month swill be at full working capacities...
to answer your question...if you are using files that excede 250+Megs then i suggest you get the 17"PB, but if you can bite your tongue, then i suggest the MacBookPro as Apple and every Third party developer is working towards an Intel/ Mac world ....the real question is are you going ot buy a 17"OBSULETE machine and then eventually get a MacBook Pro or are you going to get the Pro and just slightly suffer with Adobe Only products for a little til they output the new Creative Suite Package made soley for Intel Macs.
OS10.4 Tiger has a lot of really cool features and as tank has explained that i am arriving off a OS9 world G3. everything is so smooth and fast.
is it faster than a G4 i couldnt tell you. am i happy with my purchase? HELL YEH!!!!
would i be equally as happy with a 17"PB ...probablly just as much but someone from a G4 universe may not see a difference other than LIGHTNING FAST not-Adobe products and a sleek camera and...oh yeh it comes with a remote control with is probablly the coolest feature ever!!!!
i say get it!!! but Adobe is sluggish and if i was using Illy 9 and now i am using CS2 andi see a slow point hten maybe this isnt the machine for you.
but i still say get the laatest machine not the vintage old crap that has to be sold becuase the units were made...
Apple is putting you behind a tight wall and only giving you a small room for a heavy choice.
its not fair...but i would take the stronger of the 2 and the MacBook Pro out shines the G4 17 PB in so many variables with only 1 being that Illy is slightly faster....
blah!!!!
i got the job mother fuckers!!! and its not coach!!! its something by far better!!!
peace out!!

(Apr 3 06, 10:54)Only a bit warm? that's an improvement, my 2 powerbooks get HOT almost to the point of burning your lap.

i went with the powerbook.
ill wait til the 2nd or 3rd gen macbook comes out.
- tronfunkinblow0
Thanks epill for the rundown. I guess I will go for the macbook pro and look to the future!! It does suck though since I use the cs2 creative suite dailey. I will just have to suffer for a while!

I am still on the fence. I want to get the new one but have not heard enough to make me convinced its not a dud

I've got the 2.16ghz version with maxed out ram and HD - it's very nice.
I've also got an old first gen 1ghz 17" Powerbook which I was gonna sell but think I'll keep it now so I can be a geeky cunt.

According to DailyTech, Apple is up to (at least) revision D amongst the shipping MacBook Pros.
Revision D (SN starts with W8611)

i think it's a software issue...
of cource the macbook pro is a hell of a machine... very fast... but if u have to work with CS, then its a pain in the ass... because it runs emulated under rosetta... i've read somewhere that CS 3 will be out in the mid of 2007, so this is quit a long time... apple software is fast as hell and already available as "universal"... (at the presentation of the macbook pro, jobs said that CS is running under rosetta, but its nothing for the pros... i think he was right)
