The Flash MX/MX2004/8 Bible is pretty good for beginner. It's pretty much aimed that way. I would say this is a good all-rounder, give you a bit of everything, but doesn't go into a whole lot of detail in some areas.
I have the Flash MX bible.

i've recently bought the actionscript the definitive guide. it's not for beginners, but in conjunction with a beginner book (something from friends of ed www.friendsofed.com) you will be all set.

I bought the Flash MX Bible which is really well done, but I recently picked up the Flash 8 actionscript bible and it is no-where near as good as the first book I bought.
From what I see there are two versions of the Flash 8 bible, I would suggest not getting the "Flash 8 Actionscript Bible" as it is somewhat vague.

I'm sure the bibles are pretty good, but the book that gave me my headstart was 'Flash Web Design: The Art of Motion Graphics.' by Hillman Curtis
Although its a little old now, I think it does a great job of introducing the concept behind flash.
It, coupled with one of those actionscript books, will get you going in no time.
for actionscript make sure to look up Coli Moocks books.... well worth it!

flash noob here myself.
i picked up "macromedia flash 8 on demand" by que publishing. you can go through the pages on amazon

i don't think it's as in depth as some of the other recommendations, but the layout is clean, simple, and straight forward. good for beginners who need to familiarize themselves with the program first.
i plan on picking up some of the other books when i'm done with this one.

Get Moock's book ASDG, after you feel comfortable with the Flash Bible. That book was a great boost for me in scripting.
Plus I hear Colin is rad.

Flash 8 Savvy is an exceptional book for the beginner.

Get Keith Peters' "Foundation Actionscript Animation: Making Things Move!".
I promise you won't regret it.
