It depends where you work as to what you need to know (up to a point).
I am a partner in a v.small studio, consequently I do all the Flash stuff so I'm reasonably handy with AS and animation. I design all the websites we build, write the CSS and XHTML. Another partner does all the SQL / Coldfusion stuff, but I know enough to mess about with the coldfusion stuff and alter SQL queries.
I find when you do a lot of database driven sites that most of the satisfaction lies in producing a page that still looks good, even though all the content is being dragged out of a database and there are loops and god knows what else all over the page.
I also have to design identities for start-ups and companies that want to rebrand,
I've only got experience of all these things by doing them, even when I wasn't certain what I was doing. In my situation, you just have to learn or lose the job.

one thing, "dont do code" other thing is dont understand how it works? you do undersatnd how the technologies work on that level, no? soda?

(Mar 9 06, 03:57)I know enough to get by and also enough to understand the limitations of the medium that I am designing for. I can and do learn more from each job, but that doesn't mean I am able to take on those sorts of roles, just I understand more.

You don't suddenly lose the ability to lay out a screen by teaching yourself actionscript if you can design to start with.

(Mar 9 06, 04:13)No but if you're predominently doing screen design and development and then try jumping into a print project, worst case scenerio is that many designers just use the same tactics/solutions thinking that design is design, regardless of the medium.
Best case scenario is that you have the time to adjust and ease into a different way of thinking, but many of us don't have that luxury. So you find yourself applying the same principles..
Anyhow, I'm straying from my earlier point, look at someone like a Gmunk [only example I can think of right now] who's a very talented web and motion designer, but his print work is a direct translation of his online work. This to me is the problem with a majority of these rockstar, i can do anything and everything 'designers'...

(Mar 9 06, 04:38)Same with print designers doing things for the web. One place I was at the creative director (a print designer) would not take into consideration any of the webs restrictions, and so she would make stupid suggestions like "what if the navigation was at the bottom of the page"...like below the fold. I wanted to pull my hair out everyday.
