Greatness. Kudos to Steven Soderbergh for getting such rich performacnes from Ohio locals. It's a profound film.

I would give him props for the actors he chose, all very convincing. The movie wasn't much of a movie, though, in my opinion. Should have been categorized as a short film.

In what way was it 'profound', in your estimation?

tconn,
very funny... sometimes sarcasm is subtle it's almost difficult to detect.

what a snoozer!

In the way that he captured small town life. The despair. The lack of options. The simmering rage. The bubble. He nailed it.

i especially like the nuanced kyle character... the devil's in the details!
"eh, i don't know rose"
"umm, i don't know martha"

From the heart. No sarcasm. He took a risk. He did something completely original. I admire that.

I wouldn't call it 'profound' that he was able to capture what life is really like in Ohio. Maybe 'thoughtful' is a better word. But I'll agree he took a risk.
"Good Night & Good Luck" was profound, in my opinion. George Clooney is a lot smarter than I anticipated.

It's profound that a top Hollywood director made a film about small town Ohio. It's profound that instead of casting Jennifer Aniston and Heath Ledger he used locals. It's profound that he was able to coax believable performances from these people, especially from the woman who played Martha. It's profound that he did all this for the love of film. It's profound that he raised a middle finger at Hollywood and said, "watch what I can do. " It's a profound film.

I don't deny the acting was very sincere & some of the cinematography was just lovely, especially the closeup of her face in the jail cell at the end. Balsy & thoughtful, yes. But not profound. It didn't move me. It didn't inspire me. It didn't really even entertain me. And most importantly, I didn't learn anything from it.
Don't think it was a bad film by any means, but it wasn't exactly an epic either.

I learned that you can take a camera, a script and sheer determination to bumfuck Ohio and come away with a movie.
If that's not art, then what is?

Watch "Gummo" when you get the chance.
And of course it's art! At least in my eyes.
