Is there a better American filmmaker today? I guess you could say Scorsese tops him in terms of career achievements, and then the next level of talent - The Coen Brothers, Daren Oronofsky, David Fincher, David O. Russell, Spike Jonze, and Mark Romanek are all great, but I still think Anderson stands alone amongst his contemporaries. Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, and The Life Aquatic give him three masterpieces, and for that, he never has to make another film to be on sacred ground with me. And yet, last night I watched Bottle Rocket, his first film. It's interesting because his style is still being refined, but nonetheless it's all there, and I found it hilarious. James Caan makes a strange cameo as a landscaper/thief, one with a tiny ponytail and a kimono for good measure, and of course, Owen Wilson is the type of actor who can just make an expression and leave the audience keeling over in laughter (does he always look like he just got punched in the nose or is that me?). All the other signature thematic elements are there too: the absurdity, the forgiveness, the bizarre form of redemption at the end, the strange fusion of different cultures on one "team" (I love the Indian guy Kumar who's in every film), not to mention the 60's garage rock soundtrack and the yellow jumpsuits (clearly the precursor to Ben Stiller's red tracksuit in The Royal Tenenbaums). Also, I think it's important to note that Anderson was the one who rediscovered Bill Murray in Rushmore, which led to his great role in Lost in Translation, where he essentially did the Steve Zissou guy, a character I could watch again and again, as evidence by my need to get a few Rand-isms in every 4-5 days here on NT.
There is no conclusion to this, I just felt like Anderson is to me what Gensler is to Son, and I needed a forum to express that.
Have a lovely weekend. I'm going off into the sun.

Ultimately you will be disappointed, but in the interim, that distinction is quite profound.

Seff I caught a few clips of it on late night cable years ago and was somewhat disappointed, and it never donned on me to give it a another chance until now. That's lame I know, but it was quite a treat to rediscover it last night.
Bob's brother reminded me of Chet from Weird Science, minus the crew cut.
