Anyone got any feedback / thoughts / advice about moving to and working in HK? Also, whats the right salary for a senior design / account manager - i've got no idea ...

avg salary for your line and level of work will be about US$3,000 a month. Rent can be expensive as you like - but cost of living and taxes are hella low.
PeterH has been talking to a few companies...there is a large discrepancy between the local and national companies. You don't need to know mandarin/cantonese by any means - but it helps.
ION are hiring right now:
email Dwayne - tell him Nic sent you

Impressive folio Robob ... i've been thinking about the possibility myself for a while now (as a designer not a bad ass AD like you)
My g/f is from HK ... I wouldn't mind working there and learning some cantonese so I can actually talk to her parents *blah*
It is an amazing city

i do love it - i've only been there once, for 48 hours over new yers eve, so it was a special time, and i love the buzz, and at the same time the serenity of the hills ...
thanks for the props by the way

3000 USD a month, doesn't sound like a whole lot for an AD position with robob's level work.. surely it must be north of that...

I said that was the average...design's a funny thing in HK...a lot of clients just want the job done fast and cheap - with not much regard given to the actual design aesthetics.

There is one of the worlds best thai restaurants at a beach called ShekO on the southside. Looks like nowt much more than a shack but the food is amazing and you can feed 5 for under $40.

i'm an account director now by the way ... moving into management - will that change the opportunities there>>>???
- ephix0
oh robob, to answer your question, I will be a multimedia design/editor.
from my research, everything seems to be cheap, except for accommodation. But my work is paying for a furnished apartment and utilities ontop of my salary. So as long as you get that sorted, things will be cool!
- robbob0
good advice ehpix - thanks mate .. i'll push for that. otherwise living is cheap if you keep looking for it?

a freind of mine who works as an art director was working 80 hour weeks, he even had a bed under his desk and a bottle of Jack Daniels on hand

My brother has been working there as a trader for the past 5 years and I've been to visit him several times...
It seems that rent and accommodation can be pretty expensive if you want to live on Hong Kong Isalnd, but cheaper if you live in Kowloon which kinda like living in Brooklyn as opposed to Manhattan. But from my understanding its pretty ghetto.
If you're going to want to party it can get pretty expensive... Especially if you're eating out and feel like eating something other than chinese or asian food. If you ike coffee and are used to coffee in Australia, good luck getting a decent cup.
Its a great party town and you meet alot of transient people. I know of people that go over to teach english and save money (this would pay much more than $3000 a month), but end up being several thousand dollars in debt due to partying too hard.
Be warned. :) You'll have fun.
