I am venturing into unknown waters...aka moving out of the parents house. Therefore, I am in dire need of a laptop that doesnt suck but doesnt kill the wallet. I need a MAC, anyone know of sites with used MACS besides apple.com

i don't know what kind of schools you have nearby but if there is a design school i've found that the richer students usually get a new computer for a graduation present and their old ones are for sale for cheap.
check the bulletin boards.

it's ebay. it's not like you're dealing with second hand shady dealers in a dark alley.
your security is their #1 priority because if they're known as not secure, then they don't get any business. that's how the whole internet ecommerce thing works.

Must it be a laptop? If you build a PC Desktop you get maximum value. This is the spec sheet I put together when I was considering what parts to buy. All parts are compatable:

I ended up spending like 2K USD on it, but I was being mr. moneybags at the time. IF anything, make sure you get the motherboard. All the other goodies can come in time.

yea, it kinda needs to be a laptop, due to the fact that i will always in and out of my new place (my friend records music a lot). i wonder if i could find a local to built me a laptop..thatd be sweet

And yeah if I could build a laptop I think I would simpley die from overgizzification.
I dunno though. If you are doing sound a laptop might prove to be a bit laggy if you can't drop the cash. You may end up with a lightweight slowpoke which turns out to be not so convenient afterall..

Hi. I do music and video on my Powerbook with a minimum of problems. But I also have a decent processor with the RAM maxed.
Anyway, try www.macofalltrades.com. Or if you live near one of their cities try craigslist. The thing with ebay is that you rarely get a better deal than you could get with the refurbished stuff striaght from ebay.
