It's not pandering to validation Juliet! IE, FF, Opera - they ALL seek to follow the same standards!
You can try and be all rambo about it, but one day your site simply wont load or work at all.
You seem to think that the internet exists purly on the PC or something. Try porting the same site to TV, PC, Handheld. Then come back in here and tell me CSS isn't the future.

I think a CSS vs Tables contest would settle it.

None of my flash sites will ever work on a handheld.
Give a wet shite?
Nope, not really.
But then if I was building a newsportal I might.

hey skt so with css is it only a layout thing it doesn't affect the elements of your webpage.
Would it not lead to static dull sites or is the standards guys jusy caring about how things are positioned on screen and not the actualy content jpg, swf etc etc.

I like to think along the lines of money when talking about CSS vs Tables.
Why would a client chose a company who create their site in CSS over a company who create their website in tables?
If you can express the value of different code in monetary terms then you probably will make a much better argument than say: "tables are cool, you're an idiot" or "css is awesome because it... is".
eg. Argument to client: "Your website, is currently made using tables, we think that we can help your site achieve better sales targets just by helping it load faster. because X% of people will leave if it doesn't load within four seconds and your site takes X amount of time to load. We estimate with a rebuild you will save X amount of time and probably increase your sales by $X."
What thinks ye?

(Feb 17 06, 04:38)I think that is all very well for sales sites and information depositories. But you can't build an immersive atmospheric site in css. Or tables for that matter. Fuck it, I just want to make posters these days anyway. It's all shite.

Flash kinda makes it's own rules though. It's never going to be, or was ever meant to be accessible.

CSS is a technique not a design style. People are using the technique to create similar looking sites but that doesn't mean CSS is not good.
It does take a little longer to learn but so does php or actionscript or anything else you might need to know.
I hated building sites with tables and weird things happening to the cells and slicing graphics and stuff.
CSS means you can update quickly, you organise the site better and you can design with pixel perfect precision.
Agreed design in iteslf seems to be less and less explored these days.

skt:'Fuck it, I just want to make posters these days anyway. It's all shite.'
Ha ha so true. the number of times I've thought about giving up the web stuff. I'm glad to hear it's not just me that spends an age trying to tweak my css site. saying that it does seem retrograde going back to tables (as I have tempted to on many occaision).
sometimes a happy mix of tables and css is desired though - especially if it's a quick, low key job that just needs to work on most PC consumer browsers/platforms.

sales points:
more search engine friendly
quicker updates site wide
cross platform
accessiblenegatives:
takes a little longer to learn but as sais earlier so does AS2 classes, php classes etc etc
some restrictions require work arounds - vertical alignment etc

I am not going to get involved in this thread but I will say that on my crappy 56k connection at home sites that have a load of complex tables takes soooooo much longer to load than a CSS site.
