3ds max is still around although it's too garbled with added in crap over the years that it trips over itself constantly. Hadn't touched it in a while then an architect sent us some max files they had exported from auto cad. Fired up max 7 and remembered instantly why I hate it.

I use Max and Final Render.
Depends on what you want it for. For arch and product viz, you'll find more resources and ease of use in Max.
But really, it's just a matter of taste. I use Max because I know it, it's got a billion plugins that are extremely helpful, and you can find a model of anything with ease.
For the money, C4D is pretty hard to beat.
I am still a fan of FormZ, and the new version shows a lot of promise.
