right. i'm a mac user, im off to australia in two weeks- i don't have a laptop but have access to one over there- i need a really good portable harddrive. my girl says i need a lacie but i keep reading about problems with them and would like to keep under 100 quid but want it to be strong enough to stand baggage handlers.

LaCie's are fine - I've got one and they've been well-recommended here for years.
However, your greatest considerations should probably be size and powering - most of the drives I have seen require a seperate power supply = bulky pointlessness for you whilst you travel. Don't know what system you're packing - but consider a USB-plugged unit, as firewire isn't as commonly supported (if you're using someone else's machine)
I've got a 250gb Lacie 'porsche' unit, which seems pretty hardy - I often take it abroad, but is firewire and requires a seperate power unit.

ah. 'mac user' - then Firewire isn't so limiting for you...

I've got Lacie Mobile 80GB USB/Firewire, no power adapter required)...seems sturdy enough...but dont put in checked luggage! put it in carry-on.. or your pocket (its small enough)

thanks for the responses- is that one of the pocketdrive ones or do they do other ones without power supplies?

There's quite a few...

Unless I'm mistaken, the only external HD you can get without the need for a power supply, are enclosures that contain laptop harddrives (2.5" rather than 3.5").
So FireWire plus Laptop Drive enclosure equals a very expensive drive (cost per Gigabyte).
Hence, the selection for less than 100 quid is quite small.
My personal suggestion would be to think about using a USB 2.0 enclosure, as it would fit your cost range, has suitable speeds for transfer.

but you can get the Lacie 80GB Firewire/USB mobile for about £110, 60GB for around£80

True, that's a decent solution.
Since he said around 100, I was looking for exactly 100 after VAT.
In that case, the 60GB FireWire/USB LaCie would be a decent choice.

As an alternative, here's a Western Digital USB2.0 Portable HardDrive 80 Gb for 88.85 inc VAT.
