tables are just annoying.

(Jan 25 06, 09:22)lucky you, I occasionally need to show data on a page when I design sites. Tables aren't annoying, they're a useful and logical way to display data.

yeah, dw is cool. it's got so many features in that can be useful.
but knowing how to code by hand def helps when producing a clean code.

hand coder here. I use Homesite. I find that I'm faster by hand then using any sort of WYSIWYG app. Plus, it's better code.
Handcode: html, css, php, mysql, javascript, actionscript.

i'm in visual studio half the time and don't use the "design" view since it screws everything up.
i hand-code 80% of the time. now and then i do some basic stuff in DW8 and then bring that into VS, but i get more control via the code.

imo css must be written by hand and to code with dreamweaver is a step forward and 2 steps back, so bloated and chaotic. by hand definately.
Textpad highlight syntax, so errors are immediately noticed.
To address the original post, i think they want hand coders so they are sure the coder actually understands what he is doing not just using an application.

tables are totally the way to go for data, but thankfully, I don't have to do much of that.
I do use homesite at work, but I don't have it at home. What other options are out there?
I have dreamweaver because it came w/ studio 8... and I probably hand code because i started out as a programmer before i became a designer.

hand coding is the way to go, sometimes you do need DW. I use pspad to do all my hand coding stuff, great editor.

Ahhhhh, but I did enjoy using IBM WebSphere and Eclipse in the past. It was tied in with Version and Source control software called ClearCase, which is now Harvest. It really teaches you a lot about Process. Which you can seriously boast about at interviews. It works!

I am in the hand-coding camp.
DW is a half-assed IDE for people that do not really understand code.
BBEdit is my preferred app. Good for html, css, php, js etc.
When we all started out, we used DW because we didnt want to have to learn everythign right away. But, as you get better, you find that DW trips you up more than it helps.

isn't bbedit just a glorified text editor? i use textwrangler on my mac (it's free, yay!)

TopStyle Lite is pretty good for css editing:

it is also valid prudent to mention subethaedit.
It is a good, free editor with most of the features that BBEdit has.
Actually, there are some things, like AS, that it does better.

*raises hand...
I use text pad for everything, but thinking about getting dreamweaver just so I can see all my files contained within the same app...
a)might be a bit more time consuming but in the end it's easier to update and yes, cleaner...
b)you should see what some people do with dreamweaver. and I don't find dreamweaver code visually intuitive. maybe just the colors...

don't know if this has been said, but in a job ad "handcoding" normally means that you have a thorough understanding of the language.

Being able to handcode means you aren't a hack. It shows that you really study your craft.
From a hiring perspective it helps to know that the person coming on board will think about what they write hopefully leading to lighter, more functional and more reusable code in the long run.
That is a big difference that hiring someone who relies on Dreamweaver to do the thinking for them.
Personally, when i see any JS function start with "MM_" I cringe a little.
