I'm curious who here has a job where you actually hand-code all of your work on a day-to-day basis without the help of dreamweaver as part of your professional job.
I'm curious b/c I just saw a job posting for a designer and one request was hand coding. While I understand the value of being able to hand code and clean code, it seems a) time consuming and b) not visually intuitive.
thoughts?

dreamweaver mx doesn't display css/xhtml very well, so i spend a good chunk in code view... but why would i want to update all of those links by hand? who doesn't need to use the global find/replace?
the best craftsmen know when to choose/use the proper tools.

I hand code html, php, mysql, as , javascript all the time. I do it in dreamweaver as the code coloring really helps.

I don't handcode as such, I write all my stuff in dreamweaver and use things like hovering over divs to select them. It's just easier that way. I don't think there's any real reason why you would need to handcode as much any more.

I don't code that much, but when I do I hand code it. It's much neater that way... of course, I've been doing it for ages, so perhaps dreamweaver has improved since I last used it. I do use search and replace, of course.

(Jan 25 06, 09:14)I think it must have been a long time since you used dreamweaver, the code it chucks out if you're doing tables is fine and if you're doing div based design then you're just typing it in anyway so it's down to the designer how clean the code is.
The templating system in dw is a lot more powerful than it used to be as well.

i handcode...there are lighter, faster applications than dreamweaver which provide syntax highlighting and global find/replace...that said i do use code snippets that i or my coworkers have made to make work go faster...

ah, i don't do tables, really. i will use dreamweaver for that sort of thing though.
tables are just annoying.

I do very little handcoding, but two developers next to me do. If I'm forced to check their work, then I do it. Let me be honest with you, I'm progressing into a suit type, sick of being a worker monkey, although I am a monkey.

if you do progess to a suit jaz, make sure you wear a bowler hat with it.......its not the same without
:)

i agree w/ instantok 100%. to say one either hand-codes or uses DW and that is it, is silly. there are far more advanced and better suited dev environments to use than DW for serious authoring.

html, php, and css.
fun fun

Dont use dreamweaver its too expensive, considering I can handcode in a good notepad application

oh my, jazx in a suit. seems wrong somehow.
I understand developers hand coding but not designers.
I too work in split view in Dreamweaver so I can see the code. And though I'm not a developer, I tend to hand code divs and various elements but I can't imagine not having Dreamweaver.
thanks, guys. this is interesting.

(Jan 25 06, 09:33)hee hee, well not in a real suit, but just more in a non-developer managerial / marketing sorta' gig. Easier, much, much less stress and more money. I can't hack it anymore, I'm 33.
- monkeyshine0
xhanubis, what is your process for translating a design into code?

I can't hack it anymore, I'm 33.

notepad.
But I don't code much. Just the html pages to hold the flash...

i used to be a handcoder. then from a site management point, it made sense to use DW. i think i can do cleaner html coding by hand.
now, i don't do any html or flash. i am just a pretty boy sitting in the office doing nothing.

I chop it up into the relvant bits and then just put it together in html.
Note I do appreciate dreamweaver for whats its worth just thinks it cost alot of dough for what it does.
