i screwed this one up better than you ever could...please help!
after a 5-day/night marathon, i finally completed editing my film two nights ago and output for web. then i emptied my recycle bin and went to bed.
when i went back into FCP last night to output for DVD last night, i realized that several source video files for my film were being referred to from the recycle bin. so basically, i deleted two pivotal scenes.
the film premiers on Saturday night in NYC, and I need to get my deleted files back from two nights ago!!! no time to reconstruct the scenes!!
Can someone please tell me the steps I need to take to GUARANTEE I can achieve this? I'm on a dual G5, and the scratch discs from which the files were deleted is an external firewire drive.
I've alreaady completed these preliminary steps:
1) Panic
2) Confirm
3) Freak the fuck out
4) Search for software on google
5) not really understand what to look for because this is a firstTHANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!!

Use Data Rescue II
The best data recovery software for the Mac platform has just got better with the new and improved Data Rescue II.
I used it to recover all my MP3's that I accidentally deleted.
You'll need an external equal or bigger than your main HD.

let us know if it works.
good luck!

If you used timecode you should be able to re-digitize your files from finalcut, and it will automatically replace them exactly the way they where on your edit.
or am I wrong?

*lol
yo, what's timecode?
*whimper, weep.

timecode WAS the answer
re-edit and save yourself the data scrounging, it'll be fun!

khilled, i lost two scenes, one of which was the second most technical in the film. I need to have a copy with me when I fly to NYC on saturday morning...that's a lot of time!!!!

If at all possible make immediate arrangements to redigitaize the film negs, or recapture your tapes if it's DV. Just in case...
In the meantime, DataResue is a good suggestion.

Who else here has used Data Rescue II?
Looking for confirmation that this is definitely the way to go.
and thanks for the love, NT...

DONT DO ANYTHING ON YOUR MAC AT ALL UNTIL YOU RUN DATA RESCUE!!!!!
I used Data Rescue a few weeks ago to retrieve my itunes library.
It lets you try it for free so you can make sure it can recover the files you need.
Then after you've confirmed it can retrieve the files you pay $99 ( a small cost to pay) and they'll give you a serial number.
It worked like a charm!

get datarescue kbags...and let us know if you were able to retrieve all your files.
*sends mojo

Data Rescue saved my ass a while back.
But just in case, recapture footage if possible man.
Could be worse: go watch Terry Gilliam's Man La Mancha doc.

Posting response from a friend that can't log in:
"Is the film actual FILM footage ? or DV?
Do you still have the project files with the cut scenes ?
If so recapture the footage and relink media through FCP, try naming raw capture files as close to original as possible, also use IN and OUt points that are as close as possible to the original capture footage deleted."
- kbags0
Thanks for all the mojo, everyone! And thank goodness I haven't written a blessed thing to the drive since...
D_Dot, it's DV adn I still have the project files with the cut scenes. That's not a bad suggestion, but $99 might be able to fix the problem in minutes, as opposed to a few hours to redo the scenes. Time is at a major premium right now, but that's a good next option I think.

"using a friends account I cannot log in at the moment"
Re-linking media does not need to take hours (dependent on the time to recapture raw footage), and once fully relinked the only time would be render and output, I have had to do this with a music video that runs 3.5 minutes (director thumbing in system deleted files). The concern i would have for a recovery software is that you may potentially be recovering very large raw capture files, these files can be sensitive and the file size may tax a recovery software. If it did the potential for fragmented or out of sync raw footage increases. Then your time recovery the raw footage would be wasted. Hope it helps
