So just use those export settings in Compressor and then burn to DVD-R with iDVD?

(Dec 14 05, 00:43)yes, but it has to be a .mov file i believe, not mpg2.... I believe Idvd will not use Mpg2.

yeah iDVD is very finnicky. .mov only.

Can I get a high enough resolution with the .mov format?
And does this mean I should just use Sorenson?
thanks for the info, peeps!

If your only output is to burn on DVD, don't worry about compression just yet. The iDVD, or whatever, will handle that when encoding. Set everything to highest settings. For example: Under Compression, select "Animation," or None if available. No keyframes. Sound uncompressed.
If you need a version in which file size is an issue, choose Sorenson 3 , and select High Quality. A ketframe 15 frames or so is fine. I assume you are on NTSC, not PAL.
I've done loads of work that way that ended on 42" plasma screens, and it looked nice and crisp.

harlequino, the main issue is that I have no clue how to get the final cut pro movie I made onto a DVD!
I know how to export movs, but am not sure if i need to use compressor...and if so, how do i get it to DVD after encoding?
and i DON'T have DVD studio pro...
thanks again!!!!!

Actually, MOV can also be exported as uncompressed format, wich means no quality loss.
BUT
on what is my understanding, all the HD resolution will be lost on a DVD, because there are no HD DVDs / HD Players out yet. (I read somewhere that HD DVD/ Blu ray Discs will be out sometime in January.
That doesn't mean that your footage will look bad at all, it just means that it will be DV.
:(

I haven't used iDVD, but I think it compresses the file automatically.
Yuo can also do it with Toast 6, (if you don't care much about the menu options)

No HD in this one...so go .MOV lossless (best, whatever) and then burn to DVD using iDVD or Toast?
Will that get me a good, crisp picture?
- harlequino0
Yes that will be fine. The DVD writing software will take care of encoding CODEC.
Codec= Compression/Decompression.Render the video lossless, you should be good to go!

(Dec 14 05, 10:42)yes, it should be just like any other commercial DVD out there..
I run in to the same problem a few months ago, but I was using DVD Studio pro 3 (for exports in HD, but there is no HD/burner yet)
I'm still not sure how that works, but I guess we have to wait.
I think toasts compresses in mpeg 2, only, I do not know about Idvd, but I thought all DVDs funtion with mpeg2 compression, I might be wrong, maybe derek can help?
(hands around mouth and shouts)
DEREEEEEEEEEEK!!!!:)

Don't know if anyone else has had this issue:
Careful with Toast. After installed it, the internal writer would not write at all for a while. Once that was sorted, iDVD would not recognize a blank disc. I had to reinstall Tiger to set everything right.

(Dec 14 05, 10:58)I believe that is an OSX preference probelm not toast or iDVD, when something like that happens, select the file (option + I ) then click on the tab that says "Open With" so that type of file will open with the application you select always, then click "Cahnge all" and you are set to go.
- Meeklo0
sorry, not option + I
is Command + i:)
