I lived in Cronulla for about 10 months in 2002, and I encountered both sides of the story there... (FYI, I'm a really really pale white guy from Adelaide)
On the train on the way to Sydney my cousin and I were abused occasionally, and his housemate was KO'ed and mugged at the train station by a bunch of these "middle-eastern" guys.
At the same time though, you could cop the same from the surfies walking down by the beach... the feeling I always got was that it was 'cos I wasn't one of them... I'm not a tan blonde surfie, and i'm not middle-eastern either... it was rather intimidating...I'm ashamed of what's happened up there, but I can't say I'm surprised it's finally boiled over...
Now I'm waiting to see Parramatta on the news... if riots start out there, it won't be pretty...
