Practice practice practice, and practice some more. and don't start with ableton, that's not DJ'ing... where's the Disc?
Not that i'm knocking ableton, richie hawtin and villalobos have been rockin it for a coupla years now making some amazing mixes and parties with ableton, and final scratch, but practice, and watching other guys work is the way to go.
Tag-teaming with another guy (going record for record) with a mate is also good practice, cos you don't know what's coming next.

You don't need courses man...you need to get in there and put in the time! It does not come easy, but there's no shortcuts in learning how to mix
...I've been playing for over 12 years. Practice makes perfect.

OK I agree that maybe it's better to start with the real thing (I did too, for many years)...but I wish people would lose the attitude about digital mixing not being "real" DJing. Having just started using Live this year, there's a LOT more creativity that's possible there and you'd be wrong to ignore it as an alternative these days.

Yeah, i've used ableton and final scratch, and it does have a lot of potential... in no way would i dispute digital mixing as having its own virtue... I'm a big fan of Richard D James, Farben, Akufen etc, I'd be a hypocrite if I dissed it.
Have you seen the lecture that richie hawtin gave on ableton and final scratch?Search soulseek for deconstruktion lekture, and you get an awesome intro into the world of ableton and final scratch...

Saw sasha do a set with albeton, Sounded wicked but he was just geeking out hunched over his laptop. was pretty un-exciting to watch to be honest.
Sure you can do alot more with it, but also alot more can go wrong. But they both have their place.
Hawtins setup with his modified xone92. Now thats hawt!!!
but for me for now its vinyl all the way baby
If only it was cheaper.
$20 AUD a record kills me :(

$20 per record??? wha?? *cough*FINALSCRATCH*cough*
but seriously, have you tried substrata?
http://www.substrata.com.au/There is some gold in the sale area... i got the krikor remix of cosmo vitelli for 5 bucks, and it STOMPS.
My friend marc was also fortunate enough to get 1 of the 3 copies that substrata got of richie's new album Transitions.... it almost made me wet my pants, it is off the wall.... i recommend you order it... the live footage on the DVD will blow you away...

substratas good, but doesnt have alot of what i like. I'm more into the underground us house sound, lawnchair generals, troydon, littlemen, da sunlounge etc. But i like a bit of tech now and again.
