you'll have no problems mate, especially in the Islands.
(word to the wise though - don't try to "get in touch with your Scottish roots" or anything, nothing is more patronising than that. oh and don't be too loud. you'll be ok. oh and don't go into the mist at night especially not on a full moon)

i think you' probably get an idea of how civilized these people actually are by reading this thread. for a start eating dried puffin, shagging in the heather and chicken shit, 30mph roads, single track, cider..and the way they talk...ock aye a nooooooooooooooo. you'd be better coming out to co.wexford, i'm the vice president of the golf club there, i'll wave your green fee for two days(not a weekend)-if you mail me tonight. ps. i'm on blackberry, but i'll log off when i go to the natalie imbruglia gig!

a more welcoming friendly folk than the western scots you'll be hard pushed to find.
Like kelpie says though, the last thing anoyone wants to hear is
"Yeah, I'm Scottish..." with a North American accent... but generally very very welcoming and hospitable people!!

------------oh hey, by all means ask about and show an interest - it's hard to explain what I meant, I grew up on the west coast on the island where the Clan MacLean had it's seat, we used to get the gathering every couple of years absolutely full of Americans being REALLY patronising (I'm totaly sure you won't be - it was always rich middle aged lawyer types, dicks)...
have fun anyhow :)

Seed I AM A DOUGLAS
check it your ancestor carried Robert the bruces heart to the holy land, hence the heart on your crest yeah boyeeee. I can take a photo of your family crest if you like I have it infront of me (also carved into my chest)

I would really love to see that. I have only seen cheesy ones on the web. I don't know why my name has 2 S's but I have heard it mean black, dark blue or dark sea.
I have heard the Douglas clan has an interesting history and that at one point they were very powerful.
- seed0
Interesting, I've never read the Bruce's Heart story before.
- chossy0
hmmm I haynae ever heard of the douglass I thought you was a typing error!!.
Tell you what are you going to visit Edinburgh?. If you do go to the royal mile and visit the heraldry shop the guy there is really nice and you can talk to him at length about your history. I don't think we are the same my crest has three white stars top row and a big assed red heart in the center.

Mines got the stars and heart too.
"Whatever their early true origin, the Douglas Clan was one of the more distinguished and illustrious clans. In Gaelic, the name is Dudhglas which means black stream.
Spelling variations include: Douglas, Douglass, Dougliss, Dougless, Dowglas, Duglas, Duglass and many more.
Motto Translated: Never behind."

he he well researched my man, dark water is correct and yes our family motto is jamais arrier, which means never behind. Well done in finding that stuff out did you searhc it or did you already know.
So the heart on our crest signifies Robert the bruces heart and one of our lot died corying it to the holy land during the crusades.I wlecome you to my family seed :D or should you welcome me.... how old are you? I'm 28.
