Well imagine, in times where the country should be worried about fuel economy, 60% of your products are SUV's.
Fucking morons.

GM's trucks and suv's were their bread and butter. the sudden spike in price and a temporary shortage as a result of katrina just made people get an idea of the oil supply in the world. the people who could barely afford an H2 and bought one just to own a hummer are the ones that's getting rid of them and the ones who could actually afford them just don't care about higher gas prices. my point is that people are still going to buy big gas -guzzling trucks and suv's becuase they could afford them and the gas and/or they get them for work, and it's really not suvs's that got GM in trouble, it's their poor reliability and quality reputation. their retail price also had a factor in their decline. for years they would price themselves out of the market with their msrp price but fall back in with incentives and rebates. as you can see, it has not worked out well for them.

chevy/gm products have better gas mileage than both ford and dodge
so there's at least that

that article states that SUV sales are way down.
If 60% of your products sales are down, I would say that has a considerable bit to do with these layoffs.
Watch for Ford's layoffs very soon.

yeah, people always overlook that, too. but they're still behind honda and toyota which beat GM, Ford and Dodge cars every year in sales numbers.

30.000 people in the us and canada .. It's gonna be a tough on the people + the retirements plans are getting cut too!
GM is going belly up

Greed and mismanagement is where you can lay the blame. Same same, everywhere.
- F_180
also, their enormous pension deficit played a big part. it was underfunded by billions of dollars.

maybe they should cut in the top..

Bet those are shite places to live with no work too :(

i doubt gm goes belly up. none of the "Big 3" as they are lovingly known will not go under while any of us are alive
i'm not saying it won't possibly be bought out, but the Chevy/GM name won't be killed off in America
it's just too American for that to happen

(Nov 21 05, 08:10)life is what you make of it in these places. I grew up around steel plants. things recycle themselves well enough with time.

*none of the "Big 3" WILL go under

i know suv's sales are down but they're going to decrease to a certain amount. there will be a steady number GM can fall back on. GM is not concerned with that. they're more concerned with the healthcare and pension problems. i think i read another article that says about $1-2000 dollars from every new car sold goes to healthcare and pension. that's a lot of money other companies don't have to factor in when building a car in a certain price range.
a lot of people who's been watching GM won't be surprised if they go bankrupt. so sad.

nah, gm will be around for a long time. But toyota and honda will continually kick the shit out of them.

toyota wants to buy GM while they're down too.

(Nov 21 05, 08:11)true mate, just that ripping the industrial heart out of places can really batter them (happened here with Steel and Ship building, still feeling the effects)

(Nov 21 05, 08:13this i don't doubt, toyota even has an assembly plant somewhere down south here in america, "Assembled in USA" is probably all some of the older men hear from the commercial when they're ready to buy a truck
i read somewhere in a poll that alot (can't remember the percentage) of car buyers believe toyota to be an american product.
Now that's damn good marketing
