Do you think it is better to use you own name rather
than an invented name when sending self promos and/or trying to get work subcontracted from agencies and studios? Also, do you think it makes a difference when getting your own freelance clients?

I dont think people will trust you if you tell them your name is "Jesus" or "Sherlock Holmes" or
plus you look a bit silly when you have to return their cheques and explain.

why would you do that?

I've been learning mucho in terms of HR junk, and, unfortunately, supposedly the HR peeps like things as bare bones as possible.
Perhaps you could give your resume a little life by doing the whole "name 'nickname' surname" thing. If you want to sell yourself as a bit of a brand, give those employers more than just a resume... put that nickname on something that would be more appropriate, along with your name, of course. They have to make the connection as if they got the extra item(s) separately.

why not test it... send your resume with names like
Ben Dover
Mike Hunt
Jack Mehoffer
etc.

I'm sure some potential clients and employers would run the other way after seeing that name.
My first job interview I had an interface example I did for a gaming clan. The background of the page was a screenshot of Counter Strike and in small print at the bottom said, "PsychoKiller, fire in the hole!" Anyway, they liked me but it really freaked the ladies who were interviewing me out until a young guy that worked there had to explain to them afterwards that it's just a game and that I am probably not really a gun crazed maniac.

Back on the subject, for instance someone told me that in their opinion marketing works better to agencies if you are an individual. Otherwise they may feel that they are potentially hiring a competitor.

Think it depends on how strong your 'Fictional name' or whatever you wanna call it is.
I used my name in conjunction with a simple slogan when I first left uni... now I only use .UD but my contact is still marc@...
... yeh... name and brand...
