Risky Photos?

I want to take photos of suburban houses at night.
I'm concerned that it might upset people to see me skulking outside their properties taking what may seem like surveillance photos. (Which they aren't of course - but may be hard to explain to an irate homeowner).
They may get aggressive about defending their privacy, if you know what I mean.
How would you handle it, if you really wanted the shot?

I thought this was a problem unique to the US

If it's just their house, and you have a valid reason for doing it, go and ask them :) hell, make a small A5 printout which explains what you're doing, anyone that asks, just give 'em a copy.
I had one of those door-to-door jobs years ago, and yes, ppl don't like it if you loiter around their premises for no reason... not recommended.

If someone would be taking photos of my hood or place of residence...i would be concerned that there would be some form of burglary in process/setup.
Society today is very alert about the serroundings around them/us. Be careful...make sure you got good running shoes on to start running :D.
peace.

go ninja style. they won't see you.

Just ask permission. Explain what you are to, and surely they will agree. Maybe give them a nice glossy shot as a "thank you" when you are done.

Just do it!
You may even catch a naughty housewife in the act....Dinky, you scare me!! :-)
Gold pics!!

thanks for the ideas.
people are so much more paranoid these days which makes me a bit nervous about carrying through with this idea. anyone know if gun ownership is the norm in Australia? i haven't been here long enough to know.
i think a combo of stealth and a flyer explaining what i'm doing (if I get 'caught') might do the trick. also, i plan to do it all by bicycle (cover more ground than walking), which should help with the getaway aspect if necessary.
asking permission is in theory the best and safest way, but it will take too long I think to go through the process and it'd get painful to have to explain myself for every photo.

be stealth.
hide behind bushes.
change outfits every 5 minutes.
my friend's dad is a realtor, and he had to go take pictures of peoples houses in bad neighborhoods. just be quick.

I'm in Oz and no, gun ownership particularly in suburban areas is definitely not the norm.
Check for roaming aggressive kangaroos though, they're rampant :P
With most aussie people, I think a smile and a wave is sufficient, and tell them what you're doing if they actually care enough to ask :)

Thanks BuddhaHat, it's very reassuring to know that aussies aren't trigger happy. I wasn't quite sure about it.
Pretty much full moon tonight - may give it a go :)
Strategy:
1. Don one full length Ninja Suit
2. Hide in bushes when opportunity presents itself.
3. Peddle like the bejesus when burly aussie comes out to investigate.
4.Yell, "g'day maaate, howyagoin" to hopefully deter a chase scenario.
5. Not!You're right though - I'll try to be as friendly as possible under the circumstances.
