carson is a douche.
brockman's book is the bible, yes.
the typographic grid by bosshard is an equally amazing jump off of brockman's fundamentals.

a grid's a good place to start but don't let it control you. not to sound all zen, but people tend to submit to the grid and don't let it work for them.

sometimes I find that if i use a grid it just looks shit, like the whole layout is all square and boring. I try to stick to the grid, but sometimes I find you have to just forget it and break out of it... depends on the content really. or maybe I am constructing my grids wrong... (note to self: buy that orange grid book today)

There's really two concepts that underly the grid that I think are worth following and can be applied to all designs (even those that don't require a full-fledged grid):
1) Develop and consistently follow rules for the treatment of content. Things such as type size, font, color and placement should follow a consistent scheme.
2) Use mathematical precision when creating your layout. Set up a function to resize by the golden section (0.618) and use that proportion to create your designs.

i think it's depending on how good can u do design. if u got a bad taste in design, then even using a grid system, it still not gonna help you much.
a grid system is just some kind of a tool. but looking closly, everything is still base on the grid system like the golden section thing.

learn how to effectively design on a grid, then you can depart from it effectively. It's all about space, proportion and consistency. For these things grids make your life and your audiences life easier...
For good information design/layout be it print or web, the grid is paramount for clarity...

Thanks Franiefido for the link on Vignelli...
Negativespace and I went to pick him up and what a nice guy he is... another reason to use grid, it makes u treat others nicely...
jks.. :D
I believe, like Vignelli, Brockmann, Bosshard, and other that design should be objective... it should serve a purpose and the designer should not use design as a means to show off their artistic or express their "creativity"... communicate only please.
Grid is definitely THE way to achieve that objectivity... and as first yr design students say... using grid saves them alot of time and they usually get some sleep that way :D..
But coming back to Vignelli (after meeting him, hes my current "design-God") if any of u live around New York.. give him an email or call him and talk to this guy... hes a design legend and he LOVES to talk about design... and whenever he speaks, he utters more than 50 yrs of experience in design...
