Download the programs k0na listed above (namely Ad-Aware), and you should have an anti-virus program.

are you using a PC? Run Safe Mode.

    Go to
    Start > Run >

    - type in 'msconfig' in the text field

    - 'System Configuration utility' should open up.

    - Go to tab 'Boot.Ini' and under 'Boot Options' select '/Safeboot.

Now your computer will run in safe mode, and you should try running all those programs (especially your anti-virus program) and see what the problem is. If you still can't figure it out, take it to a repair shop. They should be able to figure it out and fix it.

GOT THE same damn thing not too long ago. changed the spam settings in my mailbox and no probs since

Modifying boot.ini to run in safe mode is unreasonably dangerous. While the system is booting, tap 'F8' (right before you see the Windows XP startup screen) to bring up a boot menu, and choose safe mode from there.

Modifying boot.ini can result in a seriously broken system if done incorrectly (ie: if you remove an extra space, or typo a directive).

Moreover, the problem described doesn't necessarily indicate a virus or spyware infection - it could be that a spammer has found a known-good email address and is using it in the 'From' fields of his/her spam. The legit 'From' frield makes it more believable and is more likely to be accepted, and the spammer never has to see the bounces (because they're delivered to the original poster). This is very common, and there's *nothing* you can do about it.

It's very possible that you have no virus at all and that your mail server isn't even sending the messages.

"Email-distributed viruses that use spoofing, such the Klez or Sobig virus, take a random name from somewhere on the infected person’s hard disk and mail themselves out as if they were from that randomly chosen address. Recipients of these viruses are therefore misled as to the address from which they were sent, and may end up complaining to, or alerting the wrong person. As a result, users of uninfected computers may be wrongly informed that they have, and have been distributing a virus. "

It's possible someone has your email address in their contacts and they are actually the one that is infected.

yeah, what 'justjeff' said is good too, haha. But I've never had any problems with running safe mode that way.
