Just got a new Power Mac G5
Dual 2GHz. Should I re-install the OS and partition the hard drive or just use it as it comes? If so does anyone have any tips?

use it as it comes but you can re-install the OS if it make u feel better

or you could reinstall..
but then you probably want to return to the way it came installed...

do you have an external hard drive too? if not maybe a partition would be good for you but it's really not necessary.
the last time i partitioned a hard drive was in 2000.

Thanks. I have a 250 GB external hard drive. Was just wondering if creating a seperate partitions for the OS, scratch disc etc. made any difference in preformance.

Well if you just use your external hard drive as storage and you aren't running any programs off of it, you can tell your Adobe programs to use your external as the scratch disk without having to partition anything.
Just to keep things simple.

no way.. erase the drives with 'zero all data' and do a fresh install, absolutely!
its documented everywhere that you shouldd do this procedure witha new box.. i think Apple even recommends it in there support docs.
if you've got 2 drives i'd recommend partitions too.. leave OSX and apps on 1 full disk and teh second break into partitions..
i've got my 2nd 250 broken into 5:
1/ scratch disk (5gb)
2/ fonts etc
3/ files
4/ downloads
5/ musicetc etc.

how do you partition an external hard drive?

Thanks horton. That's is the same way I've had my G4 set up for years.

I agree with Horton 100%!
That's what I did with any of my macs.

i did that for years too, until consolidating everything for a powerbook. for a G5, its probably not going to be a problem to partition, but on an 80GB drive, i ran out of OS/App room at 20GB pretty damn quick. Make sure you leave plenty of room.
Also Adobe apps create some kind of huge temp file on the startup drive when working with large print files. Even if you specify a diff scratch disk target, it still ate up the last 1 or 2GB of free space i had left.
Long story short, i couldn't work like that anymore.... went ahead and offloaded everything to two external HD's and then re-installed and dropped everything back into place on one volume.
Quick and dirty but not reccommended, though everything is working great. Thank gawd for OS X!

how do you partition an external hard drive?

(Nov 1 05, 11:02)use OSX Disk Utility.. locate and partition as you would for any drive.
all data must be erased to partition, so you might as well zero it.
